Verdict: The Western Visa credit cards offer a number of advantages to cardholders. Perhaps the biggest benefit is the fixed APR as low as 8.99%, along with the full range of shopping and travel benefits. There is no annual fee for this card or cost for balance transfers and cash advances. Although this card lacks a rewards program, it is still an excellent option for cardholders that want a simple credit card for purchases or those who wish to save money by transferring balances from high interest credit cards.

Overview: The Western Federal Credit Union gives members a choice of three Visa credit cards. The Visa Classic is a basic credit card with travel benefits and a fixed interest rate of 10.99%. The Visa Gold includes extra benefits and a higher credit limit. The Visa Platinum, the credit union’s premier card, has the highest spending limit along with expanded benefits and a fixed APR of 8.99%. All three cards offer many advantages to cardholders.

How These Cards Work: The Visa credit card is accepted worldwide with 24-hour access to cash at ATMS around the world. The card carries a 25 day grace period on purchases, allowing cardholders to avoid interest charges by paying their balance in full each month by the due date. Cardholders may access their account online for free and gain access to statements, transaction history, balances and more. Overdraft protection may be used as well and it will be treated as a cash advance. Finance charges are assessed beginning on the transaction date and until the balance is paid in full.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: The Visa Classic card comes with many standard travel and shopping benefits, including free convenience checks, auto rental insurance waiver, overdraft protection and emergency cash and card replacement. The Gold and Platinum cards adds extra features, like $400,000 in travel accident insurance when tickets are purchased with the card, travel and emergency assistance and a warranty manager service that registers warranties and extends them up to one year. All cards include Verified by Visa as well, which allows the cardholder to select a password to use online to prevent fraudulent purchases.

Fees: There is no annual fee for the Western Visa card and no cost for an additional joint credit card. There are no transaction fees for balance transfers and cash advances, although foreign transactions are subject to a 2% charge. The APR for this credit card is fixed at either 10.99%, 9.99% or 8.99%, depending on the card the applicant qualifies for. Late payments are subject to a $25 fee, returned payments are charged a $20 fee and there is no cost for going over the limit. A replacement card costs $5, or $10 with expedited processing. Stop payments cost $10.

Pros:

  • No annual fee
  • No fee for balance transfers and cash advances
  • Fixed APR as low as 8.99%
  • Full range of travel and shopping benefits

Cons:

  • Must be a Western Federal Credit Union member to apply
  • No rewards
  • Range of hidden fees
