Verdict: The rewards you earn with the United Mileage Plus Visa are very low. For example, you need 15,000 points (spending the $15,000) to get a $120 hotel room, or 12,900 points for a $129 flight with United, which is of course hard to find. Competitors offer much better airline rewards cards than the United Mileage Plus Visa.

Overview:
The United Mileage Plus Visa card is accepted anywhere Visa is and earns 1 point for every $1 you spend. These points can be converted to miles, used to buy United tickets, or used to purchase merchandise, hotel stays, car rentals, or as credit toward your annual fee. The rewards earned with the United Mileage Plus card, however, are very low when compared to competitor’s credit cards or other airline rewards cards.

How This Card Works:
Your United Mileage Plus Visa card has no pre-set spending limit and earns 1 point for every $1 you spend. These points can be redeemed for any available seat on United flights, hotel stays, car rentals, merchandise, or credit toward your annual fee. When you’re approved for the United Mileage Plus Visa card you’ll get a bonus of 30,000 bonus miles and an upgrade ticket and $25 travel certificate.
You also get access to online account management, allowing you to request a credit limit increase, transfer balances, change your due date, and pay your bill.

Travel and Shopping Benefits:
Your United Mileage Plus Visa card earns points on every qualifying purchase, automatically earning miles good towards Saver, Standard, and Upgrade travel awards. You can even redeem your miles for any available seat on United flights, as well as hotel stays and car rentals, with no black out dates. The option to trade your points for merchandise or credit toward your annual fee.

When approved, you’ll earn 30,000 bonus miles once you make a purchase of at least $250. After this first purchase you’ll also earn a one-way, 1,000 mile, one-class upgrade certificate and a $25 United travel certificate. You also earn 1 mile per $1 you spend.
In addition to earning miles, your United Mileage Plus Visa card comes with 0% fraud liability and emergency cash and card replacement, 24 hours a day.

Fees:
The APR for the United Mileage Plus Visa is 13.24%, which applies to balance transfers as well as purchases. The cash advance APR is 19.24% and the overdraf APR is 13.99% fixed. The default rate for this credit card is a variable 27.24%. The transaction fee for balance transfers and cash advances is 3%, not less than $5 for balance transfers and not less than $10 for cash advances. The grace period is at least 20 days. The annual fee for the Mileage Plus Visa is $60. Late fees are $15 for balances up to $100, $29 for balances between $100 and $250, and $39 for balances above $250. The over the limit fee is $39 for platinum cardholders. There is no over the limit fee for signature cardholders.

Pros:

  • No pre-set spending limit
  • 0% fraud liability
  • Emergency cash and card replacement
  • 30,000 bonus miles
  • Upgrade and travel certificate
  • Reasonable APR

Cons:

  • Rewards earned are very low
