Verdict: If you already have, or are thinking about opening, a SunTrust Bank checking account, the SunTrust Platinum Visa with SunTrust Rewards can provide you with a generous rewards program that you can use to buy everything from gift cards to airline flights to sporting goods. If you don’t have or want a checking account with SunTrust Bank, you can probably find a better rewards card that gives you points at a faster rate.

Overview: You’ll earn SunTrust points with every purchase you make with your SunTrust Platinum Visa card. You’ll earn even more points if you also use a SunTrust checking card with a SunTrust checking account.

How This Card Works: You can redeem your SunTrust points for a wide variety of items, including gift certificates, electronics, home accessories, sporting goods, airline tickets and outdoors equipments. You can also take your rewards points in the form of cash-back bonuses. If you choose this option, you’ll receive a credit posted to your account for the amount of cash-back rewards you earned.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: You’ll earn one SunPoint — the equivalent of a rewards point — for every dollar you charge with your SunTrust Platinum Visa card. If you also have a SunTrust checking account, you’ll earn one SunPoint for every $4 you spend with your SunTrust check card. You are allowed to combine the points from your credit card and check card, giving you the opportunity to boost your SunPoints at a quicker pace.

You can also use your SunTrust Platinum Visa card to participate in the SunTrust Rewards BonusBuys program. This program provides you with an online portal to reduced merchandise, everything from drug gift cards to the latest video games.

Fees: The purchase interest rate on this card stands at 15.99 percent. It does come, though, with a 0 percent introductory purchase interest rate for six months after you activate the card. There is no annual fee.

Pros

  • Solid rewards program.
  • Ability to buy discounted merchandise.
  • No annual fee.

Cons

  • Purchase interest rate is too high.
  • Must have checking account with SunTrust bank to boost rewards pace.
