Verdict: Looking for a basic credit card? Cards don’t get much more basic than the SunTrust Platinum Visa credit card. That said, this is a solid card for anyone with a weaker or limited credit history. Once you build up your credit by using this card wisely, you can then apply for a card that comes with more perks.

Overview: The SunTrust Platinum Visa card comes with the benefits that you’d expect of any major bank card: optional overdraft protection, zero liability protection, online banking and in-branch account-management options. Just don’t expect much more than that: This is a basic credit card for consumers who don’t want, need or qualify for rewards programs, cash-back bonuses or free miles.

How This Card Works: As long as you pay your monthly bill on time, and as long as you don’t run up too much credit card debt, you can use this Visa card to rebuild or establish your credit. Just don’t make any late payments. Not only will this trigger a penalty interest rate, it might also send your credit score tumbling even more dramatically.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: As a basic credit card, the SunTrust Platinum Visa card doesn’t come with many perks. It does, however, offer zero liability security protection, protecting you from paying for purchases that you didn’t actually make. You can also log onto a secure Web site to regularly check your credit card balance and payment history. Once you take out this card, you can use Visa payWave to quickly make purchases at such retailers as CVS, McDonald’s, AMC and 7-Eleven.

Fees: SunTrust doesn’t advertise its fees on its Web site. Instead, if you are interested in applying for a SunTrust Platinum Visa card, you’ll have to call SunTrust bank. You’ll then have a purchase interest rate quoted to you. The card, though, does come with no annual fee.

Pros

  • A basic credit card that allows you to build or rebuild your credit.
  • Online account management.
  • Liability security protection.

Cons

  • Few perks with this card.
  • No rewards, cash-back bonuses or free airline miles with purchases.
