The Verdict: The Star One Visa card is a great choice for most consumers. Both versions of this credit card feature a very low interest rate with excellent travel and shopping benefits. Although there are no rewards or cash back, this card is free of hidden fees and costs nothing to carry. This credit card is a great fit for individuals who want a fee to carry credit card, those who carry a balance and individuals who want to transfer a balance from a high-interest credit card to save money.

Overview: Aside from the student Visa card Star One offers, the credit union provides two Visa credit card options to members. The Gold card features a 9.75% interest rate, travel and accident insurance and a warranty manager for purchases. The Visa Platinum, on the other hand, has an interest rate of 8.75% and added concierge service. Both cards have very few fees and no hidden costs, making them an excellent choice for members that want an easy to use credit card in their wallet.

How These Cards Work: The Star One Visa card is accepted worldwide and features a full 25-day grace period. No interest is charged on purchases that are paid in full before the due date each month. Online account management is available that allows the cardholder to view statements, make payments, transfer funds and even get a cash advance transferred to their checking account online. Overdraft protection may be linked to a checking account as well. The interest rate on the card applies to cash advances, purchases and balance transfers.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: The Star One Visa card includes many excellent travel and shopping benefits for cardholders. Travel accident insurance is automatic and protects the cardholder and family members when airline tickets are purchased with the card. Travel and emergency assistance is also provided, which gives the cardholder access to emergency funds or card replacement. The auto rental collision and damage waiver allows the cardholder to avoid paying for unnecessary rental insurance as it is included automatically when a vehicle is rented with the credit card. This credit card also includes Visa’s warranty manager program, which registers the warranty for products purchased with the card and even extends manufacturer’s warranties an additional year. The Platinum version of this credit card adds roadside dispatch, return protection for purchases and a concierge service that is available 24 hours a day.

Fees: The Visa card from Star One Credit Union has no annual fee and no fees for balance transfers and cash advances. The APR for the Platinum card is 8.75% and 9.75% for the Gold card. This APR applies to purchases, balance transfers and cash advances. The penalty fees are low: $15 for late payments and $13 for returned payments. There are no additional fees or hidden costs with this credit card.

Pros:

  • No annual fee
  • Low penalty fees
  • No fee for balance transfers and cash advances
  • Low APR applies to everything
  • Great travel and shopping benefits

Cons:

  • Must be a Star One Credit Union member
