The Verdict: The SACU Visa Classic is the basic credit card from the credit union centered in San Antonio. Although there are no rewards, this card has no annual fee and a low APR for balance transfers, cash advances and purchases. For those who want a simple and straightforward credit card, this is a good option as the credit union allows cardholders to bank at over 4,000 partner branches. Still, San Antonio Credit Union does offer other credit cards with rewards systems that may be a better choice.

Overview: The Visa Classic card from San Antonio Credit Union is a basic credit card offering with no annual fee and a competitive low interest rate. Members in the Houston and San Antonio area may choose this card for its easy rate structure and the great deal of banking locations available, although there are no rewards with this card. This card also does not have the same shopping and travel benefits as other cards offered by SACU.

How These Cards Work: This Visa card is accepted worldwide and carries a 25-day grace period on purchases. To avoid interest charges on purchases, cardholders may pay off their balance in full within this time frame. Purchases and cash advances are subject to a 12.75% interest rate after a six-cycle rate of 10.90%, while balance transfers are subject to a 10.75% interest rate from the start. Cardholders can bank at any of the 19 SACU locations or use over 4,000 partner credit union locations as well.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: Unlike the Visa Gold and Platinum cards offered by the San Antonio Credit Union, the Visa Classic offers very few travel or shopping benefits to cardholders. Perhaps the only benefit this card offers is protection against fraud from lost or stolen credit cards, although this is a standard benefit with virtually all credit cards.

Fees: San Antonio Credit Union’s Visa Classic card has no annual fee and no penalty APR for delinquent payments. There are no charges for balance transfers or cash advances. This card has an introductory APR on cash advances and purchases of 10.90%, which lasts for six billing cycles. After this discount period, any existing balance will increase to the standard APR of 12.75%. The APR for balance transfers is 10.75% with no discount period. While there is no over-the-limit fee, cardholders may incur a $25 late fee or returned payment fee. Other fees associated with the Visa Classic card are a due date change fee of $15, a lettercheck return fee of $4.50, a card replacement fee of $3, a rush fee of $25, and a statement or document copy fee of $2. A foreign transaction fee of 1.00% is also added in U.S. dollars.

Pros:

  • No annual fee or penalty APR
  • Over 4,000 partner credit union branches
  • Introductory APR on cash advances and purchases
  • Low interest rate

Cons:

  • The card has many fees
  • There is no rewards system
