Verdict: The benefits offered with the Playstation credit card may sound good at first – but don’t be fooled. This card only allows you to earn bonus rewards on Playstation and Sony products purchased through the SonyStyle.com online store – really limiting the amount of rewards you can earn.
A much better alternative would be the Discover More Card, which is currently one of the best cash back credit cards out there. With Discover More you can earn 5 – 20% cash back shopping online at popular electronics retailers such as Best Buy and Target as well as 5% back on your everyday purchases in categories like gas, travel, and home improvement. You also earn 1% back on all other purchases.
Overview: The Sony PlayStation Visa Card was created specifically for Playstation owners, and those who are looking to buy a new Playstation or Sony PSP. This card is offered by Chase Bank under the PlayStation brand.
How this card works: The Sony PlayStation Visa is essentially a retail credit card. Cardholders of the Sony Playstation card can earn points for each purchase which can be redeemed for rewards such as Playstation 3 and PSP games and systems, Blu-ray movies, digital cameras and other electronics made by Sony.
Fees: This card has no annual fee.
Rewards: With this card you earn 5 Sony Rewards Points for every $1 you spend at Sony Style Stores and at SonyStyle.com. You then earn 1 Sony Rewards Point on all other purchases you make with the card. Points can be redeemed online through the Sony Rewards website.
The Sony Rewards website also has daily giveaways that cardholders can participate in, as well as some innovative ways for cardholders to earn prizes such as “reverse auctions”. Many of these features however come across as fairly gimmicky, which is really no surprise because that’s exactly what retail credit cards usually are – a gimmick.
Overall if you want a real rewards program I recommend going with a cash back credit card. Cash back cards offer the same rewards but allow you to accumulate points much more quickly.
- No Annual Fee.
- High APR.
- $50 credit towards a PSP Go is only when it’s purchased directly from Sony.
- Bonus points can only be earned at Sony Style stores or by shopping online at SonyStyle.com.
