The Verdict: Residents of the California communities of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, Sacramento, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano or Sonoma are eligible to join the Patelco Credit Union. And there’s one definite perk of membership: You can apply for the Patelco Visa Gold credit card. This card comes with a solid rewards program — though you do have to pay to participate in it — and, depending on your credit, a low purchase interest rate.

Overview: Credit cards associated with credit unions are known for their low fees and interest rates. The Patelco Visa Gold card fits nicely in this category. The card also comes with a rewards program, but you’ll have to determine whether you’ll earn enough rewards points every year to justify the $25 fee that you’ll have to pay to participate in the program.

How This Card Works: If you pay $25 to participate in the UChoose Rewards program, you’ll earn points every time you use your Patelco Visa Gold credit card. After you earn 2,500 points, you can start redeeming your points for cash or for rewards such as travel, merchandise or gift cards.

Travel & Shopping Benefits
: You’ll earn one point for every dollar that you spend with your Patelco Visa Gold card. This card also comes with price protection, roadside assistance and rental-car protection. The card’s credit limit ranges from $5,000 to $25,000.

Fees: The Patelco Visa Gold credit card comes with a purchase interest rate that ranges from 9.15 percent to 13.15 percent depending on the strength of your credit. The card comes with no annual fee, though if you participate in the UChoose Rewards program you’ll have to pay $25 every year. Cash advances cost $2.50 or 2.5 percent of each transaction, whichever fee is larger. The card’s late-payment fee is $15 if payment is 15 or more days late. The card comes with no over-the-credit-limit or returned-payment fees.

Pros:

  • No annual fee.
  • Low purchase interest rate.
  • Optional rewards program.

Cons:

  • Must be member of Patelco Credit Union to apply for this card.
  • Must pay $25 a year to participate in rewards program.
