Verdict: Gas is expensive these days, scary expensive. It’s no surprise, then, that consumers are looking for credit cards that provide them with cash-back bonuses when they fill their cars. If you live near a Marathon gas station, the Marathon Premier Credit Card might be the right choice for you. However, it depends on where you live; the card charges varying purchase interest rates depending on your home state. And in some states, the purchase interest rate can soar past 20 percent.

Overview: The Marathon Premier Credit Card provides you with cash-back bonuses on purchases you make at Marathon gas stations and food centers. You’ll also receive a larger cash-back bonus when you use your Marathon card to purchase airline tickets, reserve hotel rooms, rent cars or book cruises.

How This Card Works: There are some catches with this card. For instance, though you will receive cash-back bonuses when you use the card to purchase gasoline and convenience store items at Marathon stations, you’re only eligible to receive a total of $100 in cash back every year.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: You’ll receive a cash-back bonus of 1/2 percent of your total purchase when you buy gas or convenience store items at Marathon stores across the country for the first $100 you charge on these purchases with your card in a year. For the next $100 that you charge with the card, you’ll receive a cash-back bonus of 1 percent. For the next $200 that you charge, your cash-back bonus will rise to 1-and-a-half percent. All other purchases after this will bring you a cash-back bonus of 2 percent. You’ll also receive a cash-back bonus of 5 percent when you use your Marathon Premier Credit Card to book airline flights, make hotel reservations, book cruises or rent cars.

Fees: Your purchase interest will vary depending on where you live. In you live in Arkansas, your purchase interest rate will stand at 5 percent. If you live in Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Wyoming, Oklahoma or Tennessee, though, your purchase interest rate will stand at a far-higher 21 percent. The purchase interest rate in other states ranges from 10 percent to 20 percent. For most states, the annual fee with the Marathon Premier Credit Card stands at $35. A small number of states, though, have lower fees. The card’s late-payment fee ranges from $0 to $10 depending on your state, while the returned-payment fee runs from $0 to $35.

Pros:

  • Cash-back bonuses on gasoline and convenience store purchases.
  • Cash-back bonuses on travel purchases.

Cons:

  • Purchase interest rate can be high depending on the state in which you live.
  • Annual fee of $35.
  • $100 limit on gasoline cash-back bonuses you can earn during a given year.
