The Verdict: The Kern Schools Platinum Plus card has a number of advantages for cardholders, including no annual fee and a credit limit that can be as high as $250,000. Unfortunately, the card has a high APR of 12.99% to 20.99%. Cardholders that use their card responsibly and don’t incur interest charges, however, may enjoy the high credit limit along with the rewards system in place.

Overview: Kern Schools Federal Credit Union will extend membership to applicants in the Kern County, California area. The credit union offers a range of financial services, including a Platinum Plus card that offers high credit limits and a solid rewards system. Although there are disadvantages like a high APR, this card may appeal to cardholders that pay off their balance in full without incurring interest charges.

How These Cards Work: The Platinum Plus card is accepted worldwide. There is at least a 25 day grace period for purchases and cardholders can avoid interest charges by paying their balance in full during this period. The card earns one point for every $1 spent and these points may be redeemed through the WorldPoints system. Points may be redeemed starting at 2,500 points for merchandise, travel, cash, gift certificates and more. After the first qualifying purchase, cardholders receive a $25 statement credit. Online account access is available which allows the cardholder to view up-to-date statement information, transactions, payment history and more.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: The Kern Schools Platinum Plus card comes with a range of excellent travel and shopping benefits. Emergency cash is available up to the credit limit, along with emergency card replacement. Cardholders can receive instant decisions regarding credit limit increases and a credit limit up to $250,000 is possible for qualifying applicants. Travel accident insurance is automatic if tickets are purchased with the card and supplemental auto rental insurance is included as well. Along with these benefits, cardholders earn one point for every $1 spent with the card. These points may be redeemed through WorldPoints for gift cards, travel, merchandise, cash and more.

Fees: The Platinum Plus card from Kern Schools has no annual fee. An introductory APR of 0% applies to purchases for the first 12 billing cycles. The standard APR for balance transfers and purchases is 12.99% and 20.99%. The APR for cash advances, however, is 24.24%. There is no penalty APR for this credit card. The minimum interest charge, if incurred, is $1.50. The purchase of wire transfers, cash advances and balance transfers are subject to a 4% transaction fee, with a minimum charge of $10. Foreign transactions, on the other hand, are subject to a 3% fee. There is no over limit fee for the Platinum Plus card, although a late payment may incur a fee up to $35 and a returned payment may cost up to $25.

  • No annual fee
  • Bonus $25 credit
  • Earn one point for every $1 spent
  • Platinum benefits for cardholders
  • 0% APR on purchases for 12 months
