Verdict:

A good credit card if one makes regular cruises on Holland America cruise lines or makes regular purchases with Holland America or its affiliates.

If this isn’t the case, then it’s just another regular credit card with a points rewards programs. But be aware that the rewards program is heavily slanted toward using the card on Holland America, although they can be used as airline credits.

Fees and interest rates are fairly reasonable, however. But, if one just needs a credit card, there are others out there that may be better.

Overview:

This is a VISA credit card that is sponsored by Holland America Cruise Lines.

Double points can be earned by making Holland America-sponsored purchases, including on-board purchases. The points can also be used as airline credits.

It is also possible to purchase points if the cardholder desires, and the rate is very reasonable–$30 for 1000 points. This can help the cardholder build up points quicker.

How This Card Works:

It is a VISA card, so it can be used anywhere VISA cards are accepted.

The cardholder’s first use earns 5,000 points, which amount to a $50 onboard credit on Holland America cruise lines.

Double points are earned for making Holland America purchases, and 5,000 additional points can be earned for making an initial balance transfer.

Travel and Shopping Benefits:

Points can be purchased, which can help cardholders earn points for use as airline credits or cruise discounts faster. Points are 1/1 on other purchases, which means that 1 point is earned for every $1 spent on a regular purchase (one that does not have anything to do with Holland America).

Fees:

This is a no annual fee card, which is a plus in itself.

In addition, the fees for balance transfers, cash advances, and other services are fairly reasonable, ranging from 3% or $10, whichever is greater on cash advances and 4% or $10, whichever is greater, on balance transfers. (This is a little high, however. Other cards offer 3%/$10 balance transfer fees.)

The Bottom Line

Like I said at the top, this card provides the most value for frequent cruisers on Holland America Line.

Pros:

  • No annual fee
  • Reasonable fees
  • Can purchase redemption points from Redemption Center for $30 per 1,000 points

Cons:

  • Heavy encouragement to use Holland America Cruise Line
  • Variable interest rate
  • Balance transfer fees are higher than other credit cards
