Verdict: The FlexPerks Select Rewards Visa Check Card comes with much to recommend it: You’ll earn bonus rewards points just for signing up for the card. You’ll earn rewards points with every purchase you make. And you can redeem these points for a wide variety of items. But the card does come with some drawbacks: It features an annual fee. And you’ll have to make sure to use your debit card as a credit card when making purchases to qualify for any rewards. Forget to do this, and you won’t earn any rewards points for the transaction.

Overview: You can redeem your FlexPoints once you’ve earned at least 5,000 of them. You can then redeem these points for everything from gift cards and merchandise to travel rewards. There is no limit on the number of FlexPoints that you can earn.

How This Card Works: When you make a purchase with your FlexPerks Select Rewards Visa Check Card, the money for the transaction will be immediately withdrawn from your checking account with U.S. Bank, the bank that issues this card. However, when you want to earn rewards, you’ll have to check out with your card as if it was a credit card and not a debit card. If you do this properly, you won’t enter a PIN to complete your purchase. Instead, you’ll sign a receipt as if you were using a traditional credit card. Don’t worry, though; even if you complete a transaction in this manner, the money to pay for it will immediately be withdrawn from your checking account.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: You’ll earn one FlexPoint for every two dollars worth of purchases that you make with your Select Rewards check card. You’ll also receive 2,500 FlexPoints just for signing up for this card. Once you earn as least 5,000 FlexPoints, you’ll be able to redeem your rewards points for a wide variety of merchandise.

Fees: You’ll be charged an annual fee of $20 to use this card. This is a rarity: Most check cards do not come with any annual fees. You’ll also be charged ATM fees if you use your card to withdraw funds from an ATM not operated by U.S. Bank.

Pros:

  • Convenience; you won’t have to use checks or carry a lot of cash.
  • You can earn rewards points with every purchase.
  • 2,500 bonus rewards points just for activating the card.

Cons:

  • $20 annual fee.
  • Have to remember to use your card as a credit card when making purchases if you want to earn points.
