Verdict: The Delta SkyMiles World Check Card is not an inexpensive one to own. You’ll have to pay a $55 annual fee to use this card. However, it does come with a generous rewards program, one that will provide you with a larger number of rewards points depending upon what purchases you make with your card. Once you’ve earned enough rewards points, you can cash them in for free flights with Delta Air Lines. You’ll have to determine if you use your credit cards enough to earn enough rewards points to justify the annual fee.

Overview: You’ll earn rewards points with every signature purchase that you make. This is a key distinction: When making purchases, you’ll have to use your debt card as if it was a credit card. Instead of entering a PIN to complete your purchase, you’ll have to sign a receipt. The money to pay for your transaction will still come directly from your bank account. But any transaction for which you don’t sign will not give you any reward points.

How This Card Works: You’ll need to take out a checking account with SunTrust Bank, the financial institution that issues this card, to use the Delta SkyMiles World Check Card. Once you do, your check card will be tied to this account. Every time you make a purchase, the money to cover it will immediately come out of your SunTrust checking account. If your checking account doesn’t have enough funds, your purchases will be denied.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: You’ll earn one Delta mile for every dollar’s worth of signature purchases that you make with this card. You’ll earn two miles whenever you use your check card to make a signed Delta-related purchase, including booking flights, ordering in-flight movies or paying for in-flight snacks. The card also provides a healthy bonus serving of miles: After you make your first signature purchase, your account will be credited with 5,000 bonus rewards points. There is no limit on the amount of miles points that you can earn with this card.

Fees: The card does come with an annual fee of $55. You’ll also pay fees if you use the Delta SkyMiles World Check Card to withdraw funds from an ATM not operated by SunTrust Bank. These fees vary, but usually range from $1 to $4 for every transaction.

Pros:

  • Generous rewards program.
  • 5,000 bonus points after first signature purchase.
  • Additional rewards points for Delta purchases.

Cons:

  • Annual fee of $55.
  • Can only earn rewards points with signature purchases.
