Verdict: The Delta SkyMiles Classic Check Card comes with a few too many negatives to make it a top-flight card. It’s true that this debit card does allow cardholders to earn miles that they can convert into free flights on Delta Airlines. But the miles don’t build up quickly enough. And consumers can only earn miles on signature purchases, a flaw that might cause many cardholders to rack up far fewer miles than they might expect to earn.

Overview: Issued by SunTrust, the Delta SkyMiles Classic Check Card allows consumers to earn miles at two different rates: a faster one when they’re making purchases directly from Delta, and a slower one for all other purchases. The card does come with a small annual fee.

How This Card Works: Consumers can only earn free miles for signature purchases. This means that whenever they use their PIN to make a debit purchase at their grocery store, gas station or any other retail establishment, they won’t earn any free miles. They instead must choose “credit” when making purchases with this debit card. This is an annoying feature; it’s easy to imagine cardholders forgetting this rule and then being shocked to see how few free miles they racked up during the course of a month.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: Cardholders earn one mile for every $2 worth of signature purchases they make on their cards. They’ll earn double miles, though, for every purchase they make that’s directly affiliated with Delta, everything from flights to in-flight movies to SkyClub access at major airports. Cardholders also receive 7,500 bonus miles with their first signature purchase.

Fees: The Delta SkyMiles Classic Check Card comes with an annual fee of $20. The miles that cardholders earn won’t expire as long as cardholders earn or redeem miles or purchase miles at least once every two years. If cardholders don’t use their SkyMiles Classic Check Card for the first 12 months after enrolling, SunTrust will automatically cancel the card.

Pros

  • Can earn double miles for Delta-based purchases.
  • Can earn miles for all purchases.
  • 7,500 bonus miles after first purchase.

Cons

  • Only earn miles for signature purchases.
  • Annual fee of $20.
  • Only earn one mile for every $2 spent on non-Delta items.
