Verdict: The Citi Select/AAdvantage American Express credit card allows users to quickly build enough miles to take free round-trip flights in the contintental United States and Canada. The card does come with a fairly high $85 annual fee, though, it’s one drawback.

Overview: Every time cardholders make a purchase, they’ll receive rewards points that they can cash in for free miles on American Airlines flights. These miles do not expire, and cardholders are able to earn as many as 100,000 of these miles a year. American Airlines is a major carrier, so cardholders won’t have trouble finding flights on which to use their free miles.

How This Card Works: Cardholders can redeem their rewards points for airline tickets as soon as they reach 25,000 points. The payment due date with the Citi Select/AAdvantage American Express card is at least 23 days after the close of each billing cycle. Cardholders won’t have to pay any interest if they pay off their balances in full before the due date.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: With the Citi Select/AAdvantage American Express card, consumers earn one American Airlines rewards point for every $1 they put on their cards. Cardholders can receive 30,000 bonus air miles if they spend $750 with their cards during the first four months that they own it.

In most cases, cardholders need to reach at least 25,000 points before they can redeem them. However, the card does come with a reduced mileage award program. Under this program, cardholders can redeem their rewards points at just 7,500 to travel to select destinations. American Airlines selects these destinations every quarter.

Cardholders can use their rewards points to fly on American Airlines, American Eagle and AmericanConnection flights.

Fees: The Citi Select/AAdvantage American Express Card comes with a reasonable interest rate of 15.24 percent. Its other fees are also in line with industry standards: Late fees cost from $15 to $39 depending on the balance that cardholders carry. Returned payment fees run $39, while cash advances cost either $10 or 5 percent of the advance amount, whichever is higher. The annual fee is $85, though this fee is waived during the first year in which the cardholder owns the card.

Pros

  • 30,000 bonus miles after charging $750 in first four months.
  • Earn one air mile for every dollar charged.
  • Can cash in miles earlier for select destinations.

Cons

  • Annual fee of $85.
  • Late fees can run as high as $39.
  • Must earn 25,000 points in most cases before redeeming.
