Several other benefits, including the Extra Cash Rewards program and excellent identity theft protection, make this a good card if you don’t typically carry a balance.
Citi Platinum Overview
The Citi® Platinum Select® Visa® offers the lowest interest rate of all Citi’s cards and no annual fee. The rewards, compared to other cards in its class for consumers with good-to-excellent credit, could be better. But fraud protection, Citi’s Identity Theft Solutions program, and easy online bill pay make this card desirable to people who shop online often or who worry about identity theft.
With 0 % introductory APR, this card is good for people with good-to-excellent credit who plan to make a large purchase they will pay off within 18 months.
You can pay your bills easily online through the Citi website. You’ll get same-day posting as long as you schedule your payment by 5 PM ET Monday – Friday. Citi offers paperless statements and also paperless letters to cut down on paper mail. You can also request credit line increases, additional cards and balance transfers through the website.
The times I’ve had to call Citi with questions about my card or account, wait times were low and customer service reps were exceptionally friendly and helpful.
The Citi Platinum Select Card also offers Citi’s Identity Theft Solutions service. In the event your identity is stolen, Citi will assist you in taking the steps necessary to resolve the issue, restore your credit and restore your name. The Identity Theft Worksheet, available through the Citi website, lets you track your reporting efforts easily.
Citi Cards’ Internet Security Specialists can help determine if an email or website is legitimate, help you assess your PC to see if you are at high-risk for identity theft, and more. The Citi Platinum Select card offers $0 liability on unauthorized purchases, meaning you’re protected no matter what if your card or account number is lost or stolen.
The Citi Platinum Select Card provides “Virtual Account Numbers” for online shopping, making it one of the safest cards around. You can also request a “Citi Photo Card” for added theft protection.
Travel and Shopping Benefits
Most people who get this card will do so for the identity theft protection and the low interest rate; better rewards cards exist, even within the Citi family of products.
Each time you use this card, you’ll accumulate Extra Cash totaling 10 % of your monthly eligible purchases. You can use this Extra Cash for discounts on travel, entertainment, merchandise purchases and more when you buy through the Extra Cash store using your eligible Citi card.
In addition, by shopping through the Extra Cash Bonus Center, you can earn an additional Extra Cash back bonus of 1 to 10 %. The Extra Cash Bonus Center is a gateway to 400 online stores. You can also shop at participating local stores and through catalogs or even order gift cards online. Finally, you’ll find special deals, from free shipping to steep discounts, by shopping through the Extra Cash Bonus Center.
In addition to the savings that this card offers, customers will receive purchase protection and insurance benefits. Most items that are purchased with this card are eligible for up to $1,000 in coverage in the event of damage or theft within a 90 day period. Also, vehicle rentals are covered in the event of damage or a loss when rented with this card. Additionally, travel accident insurance is provided when plane, train or bus tickets are purchased with this card.
Balance Transfer Benefits
The 0 percent APR on balance transfers can be a major benefit for customers who use this card. This is particularly so for customers who have a large balance with a high-interest credit card. Let’s say that you have 20 percent interest on a $20,000 balance. That comes out to an annual amount of $4,000 just in interest. That’s more than a month’s salary for the average American.
Assume that you were to consider doing a transfer of the $20,000 balance to the Citi Platinum Select. You’d have to pay a 3 percent balance transfer fee, which equates to $600. For the next 18 months, you’d be able to chip away at this balance without incurring interest. Even if you didn’t pay it off, you’d have a lower balance once the interest kicks in and thus would pay less interest. That $600 fee upfront would be well worth it if you chose this route.
This card offers 0% interest for purchases and a 0% APR on balance transfers for 18 months. After that, the APR will be variable. Also, it has no annual fee. For a full list of fees and current interest rates, check the official website before applying.
Citi Platinum Select MasterCard vs Citi Platinum Select Visa Card
The Citi Platinum Select Visa card is an identical version of the Citi Platinum Select MasterCard. The introductory APRs are the same and the offers appear to be identical. The only noticeable difference is that 1 carries the Visa logo and the other carries the MasterCard logo. In either case, you’ll have essentially the same benefits and expenses, so there is not much of a difference.
Citi Platinum Select vs Discover it Card
The Discover it card offers a 0 percent APR on purchases and balance transfers for 18 months, which is the same as the Citi Platinum Select. The variable APRs after the introductory periods are similar for each card. The Discover More card has a foreign transaction fee of 2 percent while the Citi Platinum Select has a foreign transaction fee of 3 percent, giving Discover a slight edge in this category while Citi’s offer is better in most other categories.
In terms of rewards, Discover and Citi offer quality rewards with their respective cards. Discover offers 5 to 20 percent cash back on purchases through their online mall and 5 percent cash back on rotating categories. Up to 1 percent cash back is given for all other purchases. If you plan to do a lot of your shopping through Discover’s online mall, then the rewards are comparable to those of Citi.
For customers who are looking for a balance transfer card, the Citi Platinum Select gets the win over the Discover More card. While both cards share a 3 percent fee on balance transfers during the introductory period, the balance transfer fee on the Discover More card climbs to 5 percent after this period while the fee on the Citi Platinum Select remains at 3 percent.
Citi Platinum Select vs Chase Slate Card
The Chase Slate card offers a 0 percent introductory APR on purchases and balance transfers for 15 months for those with good or excellent credit, which is less than the offer of 18 months that comes with the Citi Platinum Select. For those with average credit, this offer is for 6 months. After that, the variable APRs are very similar among both cards. This card has a slightly lower cash advance fee of 3 percent as compared to Citi’s offer. Each card has no annual fee.
In terms of rewards, the Chase Slate card does not offer nearly as many as the Citi Platinum Select. It is basically a card that is good for balance transfers, but it is not as good as the Citi card in that field, as well. Citi’s offer has Chase’s offer beat in just about every way when comparing these 2 cards.
