Verdict

The Citi® Hilton HHonors™ Visa Signature® Card is a good card for those who like to stay at Hilton family hotels.

Customers will gain valuable rewards with this card.

The upfront rewards alone are worth over 5 nights of hotel stays. The rewards per dollar spent are also generous.

There is also no annual fee, making this a solid rewards card for Hilton fans.

How the Hilton HHonors Rewards Program Works

The Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature card is geared towards Hilton customers, as the name implies.

Points are earned with each purchase and they can be redeemed for stays at hotels within the Hilton family.

Each night will cost at least 7,500 points; and may cost as high as 80,000 points.

This card helps you obtain those points by offering a 75,000 point bonus offer after you spend $2,000 within the first three months. Customers who stay at a basic Hilton hotel (category 1) will get up to 10 nights worth of hotel stays out of this.

For customers who prefer to travel in luxury, this is worth almost an entire night at a Waldorf Historia hotel.

Customers who use this card to make purchases will earn at least 2 points per dollar spent.

For purchases made at Hilton’s 10 distinct brands, 6 points are offered per dollar spent. These brands include:

  • Conrad
  • Doubletree
  • Embassy Suites Hotels
  • Hampton Inn
  • Hampton Inn & Suites
  • Hilton
  • Hilton Garden Inn
  • Hilton Grand Vacations Club
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton
  • The Waldorf Historia

Purchases at supermarkets, drug stores and gas stations are worth 3 points per dollar spent. And all other purchases are worth 2 points per $1.

As mentioned, this card allows customers to earn points toward Hilton hotel stays. It’s rewards are best suited to those who prefer to use Hilton family hotels.

The points are really what make this card. In fact, we think it’s points system is more generous than many others out there.

In addition to the points that can be redeemed for hotel stays, this card offers various other rewards. Auto rental insurance, travel accident insurance and fraud protection are offered with this card. These and the remaining benefits that come with this card are standard to many other cards, but are worthwhile nonetheless.

Interest Rate, Fees and Other Fine Print

This card comes with a variable APR on purchases that is currently at 15.49 - 19.49 percent variable.

There is no annual fee and a foreign transaction fee of 3 percent.

The cash advance fee is a bit high at the greater of $10 or 5 percent along with the cash advance APR of 25.24 percent. For those who plan to take a lot of cash advances, this could be a problem.

The remaining fees are similar to those found elsewhere.

How It Compares To Other Rewards Credit Cards

Citi Hilton HHonors vs Chase Sapphire Card

The Chase Sapphire card offers 25,000 bonus points after $3,000 is spent within the first 3 months. With a lower dollar amount ($1,000) that must be spent within a longer time frame (4 months) to get more points (40,000), the Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature card offers a better bonus.

The Chase Sapphire card offers up to 10 points per dollar spent through their online mall, 2 points per dollar spent on airline tickets and 1 point per dollar spent on everything else. Citi’s offer is better in this regard, as well. Citi offers at least 2 points per dollar spent and up to 6. Basically, unless you do most of your shopping through Chase’s online mall, Citi’s points offer is better - especially if you are a Hilton fan.

The fees are similar among both cards. With this in mind, the Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature card is the best of the two, if you are comfortable being limited to Hilton hotels.

Citi Hilton HHonors vs Wyndham Rewards Visa Card

The Wyndham Rewards Visa card offers 12,000 or 18,000 bonus points after the first purchase, depending on the version of the card. The Hilton HHonors has either offer beat.

In terms of points per dollar spent, the better offer depends on which types of purchases are made most. Those who use a credit card primarily for routine purchases will be better off with the Hilton HHonors card, as it offers more points on such purchases. However, those who travel frequently will be much better off with the Wyndham Rewards card, as it offers many more points for hotel stays.

The fees are similar among both cards.

Frequent travelers will be better off with the Wyndham Rewards Visa card, even when the upfront bonuses are considered, as customers can earn many more points per dollar spent at Wyndham locations than at Hilton locations. Those who use it mainly for other purchases will be better off with the Citi Hilton HHonors Visa Signature card.

Citi Hilton HHonors vs Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card

For stays at Marriott locations, customers will earn 5 points per dollar spent with the Marriott Rewards Premier Credit Card - 1 point less than is earned at Hilton locations. Most other purchase categories work this way as well, with the Hilton HHonors card being good for 1 more point than the Marriott Rewards card in most categories.

The Marriott Rewards card has no annual fee in the first year and a $85 fee thereafter. The Hilton HHonors card has no annual fee at all. The rest of the fees are somewhat similar. With more points to be earned in the long run and no annual fee, the Citi Hilton HHonors card is the best bet among these two cards. Most customers will be better off with Citi’s offer.
