Verdict: This is actually a World MasterCard; however, this particular card is sponsored by China Airlines. It has a rewards program that encourages use of China Airlines in order to earn double points, but other than that the points rewards program works similar to that of other credit card rewards programs. Consumers can choose between an annual fee and no-fee card, however, and this is a good thing.

Overview: As mentioned earlier, this is simply a World MasterCard. Cardholders have the opportunity to earn rewards by making purchases, initiating balance transfers, and using China Airlines for travel arrangements and transportation. APRs are variable, with 15.99% being the lowest one and 24.99% being the highest. The cardholder’s rate is based on individual creditworthiness.

How This Card Works: This card works just like any World MasterCard; however, double points are rewarded for using China Airlines. Depending on whether the annual fee card or no annual fee card is chosen, cardholders have the opportunity to earn bonus points immediately upon the first use, and this is not contingent on the use being connected with China Airlines.

The first-use bonus points are 7,500 on the annual fee card; 2,500 on the no fee card. In addition, balance transfers are good for 5,000 bonus points; this is the same whether the annual fee or no fee card is used.

Travel and Shopping Benefits: Cardholders who choose the annual fee card get 2 points for every $1spent on China Airlines travel and 1 point for every $1 spent on other purchases. No fee cardholders earn 1 point for every $1 spent on China Airlines travel and 1 point for every $1 spent on other purchases.

Fees: If the cardholder chooses the annual fee card, the fee is $59 per year. Balance transfers are 4% or $10, whichever is greater, and cash advances are $10 or 5%, whichever is greater. These fees are higher than most other credit cards.

Pros:

  • It’s a regular World MasterCard, just with a specific sponsor
  • Reasonable interest rates
  • Good for international travelers

Cons:

  • Higher fees than most cards
  • Must choose annual fee to get better rewards points
  • Not good if cardholder does not do much international travel
