The Verdict: The Platinum Choice Rewards card from the California Coast Credit Union has quite a few advantages for members. This card has a credit limit up to $10,000, an APR as low as 10.99% and enrollment in the Coast Rewards program. Although the rewards program is very versatile with a great variety of rewards, this card does carry a $35 annual fee. This card can really only be recommended to members who do not carry a balance and spend a great deal to make up for this annual cost.

The Visa Platinum Choice Rewards card has a generous credit limit, a very versatile rewards program and low penalty fees. With no hidden costs, this card can be a good choice. Overall, this credit card is best for the following: those who don’t carry a balance, individuals who spend frequently to earn points, those who spend enough to more than cover the $35 annual fee and cardholders who want a rewards card with a range of redemption options.

How These Cards Work: This credit card is accepted around the world. It has a full 25-day grace period that applies to purchases only. To save on interest charges, cardholders may pay their balance in full before the due date. Cash advances and balance transfers accrue interest beginning on the transaction date with no grace period. This card has a credit limit that ranges from $500 to $10,000, based on the credit history of the applicant. There is an optional debt insurance program available called California Coast Guard Plus, which offers protection against disability, death and involuntary unemployment. Enrollment in the insurance program charges a fee that is a percentage of the balance of the card each month. Online access to credit card information is available, and members may also use the Coastline phone service to check a balance, make a payment, transfer funds and receive statement information. The Platinum Choice Rewards card also has an excellent rewards system that allows the cardholder to earn points on every purchase. Points may be redeemed through Coast Rewards for merchandise, gift cards, travel, accommodations, cash back and more.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: The Platinum Choice Rewards card has a number of great travel and shopping benefits. Travel accident insurance is automatic when airline tickets are purchased with the card. This benefit covers the cardholder, spouse and children. Auto rental insurance is also included to protect against theft or damage to the rental car. Emergency assistance like card replacement and cash disbursement is also available. This credit card also includes fraud protection and the optional Verified by Visa system, which lets the cardholder choose a password to enter at online checkouts to verify their identity.

Fees: The California Coast Platinum Choice Rewards Visa has an annual fee of $35. The variable APR ranges from 10.99% to 15.99% and is based of credit worthiness. This same APR applies to purchases, balance transfers and cash advances. There is a 1% fee from the Visa network for foreign transactions if they require a currency conversion. If the transaction is completed in U.S. currency, a 0.8% fee applies. No fee is charged for balance transfers, although cash advances are subject to a 3% fee with a minimum charge of $5 and no maximum.
