The Verdict: Overall, the Bethpage Visa card is a well designed card with a number of advantages for cardholders. There are three different versions of the card to choose from, allowing members to select a style that fits their spending habits. There is no annual fee and no hidden costs, although the card does have an APR as high as 22.15% and the cash back card has a troublesome tiered system. Still, the Bethpage Visa has advantages that make it a good choice for many cardholders.

Overview: Bethpage Credit Union members have the choice between three different versions of a very solid credit card. The low interest card has an interest rate as low as 8.15%, the CU Rewards Cash Back card earns up to 1.00% back on purchases and the CU Rewards Points card earns points on every purchase. These cards have no annual fee and excellent fraud protection, making them a good choice for many credit union members.

How These Cards Work: The Bethpage Visa card is accepted worldwide. To avoid interest charges, cardholders must pay the new purchase balance in full by the due date each month, which is within 25 days of each statement closing date. CardLock is available with this card and may be activated online or over the phone. CardLock allows the cardholder to block or unblock transactions on their credit card to protect against fraud. An iPhone application is also available for cardholders for protection on the go. Members have the choice between three different versions of this card: the low interest rate, the CU Rewards Cash Back and the CU Rewards Points card. With the Cash Back card, the system is tiered. Cardholders earn 0.50% on month-end purchases between $1.00 and $4,000. 1.00% is earned for month-end purchases between $4,001 or more. Cash back is distributed every October.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: Cardholders enjoy a number of standard shopping and travel benefits with all three versions of the Bethpage Visa. Auto rental insurance covers the cardholder for theft and collision up to the actual cash value of most rental cars when the Visa card is used. Travel accident insurance is automatic when tickets are purchased with the card and covers the cardholder, spouse and children. Zero liability protection is also included, protecting the cardholder from any unauthorized purchases. Another form of fraud protection, CardLock, is also available upon enrollment. While the low interest rate card allows cardholders to get an APR as low as 8.15%, the other two versions of the card earn either cash back on every purchase or one point for every dollar spent. Points can be redeemed for merchandise, travel and more. Between September 12 and December 31, 2011, cardholders that select the CU Rewards Points card will receive 2,500 bonus points and earn double points on every purchase.

Fees: There is no annual fee for any version of the Bethpage Visa card. The variable rate for the card is between 8.15% and 22.15%, depending on credit worthiness and credit history. For the two rewards cards, the APR starts at 11.15%.This APR applies to purchases, cash advances and balance transfers. A penalty APR of 22.15% may be applied to the account if the cardholder fails to make the minimum payment by the due date for three consecutive months, or if a payment is returned unpaid and there are two other consecutive minimum payments missed. When interest is charged on the account, the minimum amount is $1.00. Although there is no transaction fee for foreign transactions and balance transfers, cash advances are subject to a 3% fee with a $5 minimum. There is no over limit penalty fee but a late payment will cost the minimum payment due or $25, whichever is less. A returned payment fee is the lesser of the minimum due or $25. Document copies cost $5 maximum per item and reissuing a lost card carries a $10 fee.
