Verdict: There’s a reason for the word “standard” in the name of the Bank of the West Standard MasterCard: This card is a basic, no-frills card. That being said, this card also doesn’t charge an annual fee and offers an introductory interest rate of 0 percent on new purchases for a limited time. Be wary of that purchase interest rate, though; it’s quite high.
Overview: Don’t expect rewards programs or cash-back bonuses with this card. But because the Standard MasterCard doesn’t come with an annual fee, carrying this card in your wallet won’t cost you anything.
How This Card Works: Bank of the West offers three main MasterCard types: standard, platinum and platinum rewards. Which card you qualify for is based on your credit score. Consumers with the lowest scores will qualify for the standard version. This is the bank’s most basic card type, one that comes with few perks and a higher purchase interest rate.
Travel and Shopping Benefits: Because this isn’t a rewards card, the Standard MasterCard comes with few perks. It does offer secondary car rental collision insurance, which can protect you if you get into an accident while driving a rental car. The card also comes with protection against fraudulent purchases and travel accident insurance. You can access your credit card account online at any time.
Fees: This card comes with an introductory interest rate offer on new purchases of 0 percent for the first six months after you open your account. After that time, the purchase interest rate jumps to a rather high 20.99 percent. There is no annual fee, but the card’s penalty interest rate, assessed if you miss a payment or make a late payment, is a sky-high 29.99 percent. Cash advances cost $10 or 3 percent of the advance amount, whichever is higher. Fees for late payments, returned payments or going over your credit limit are all $35.
