The American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card is a great card with a solid rewards structure and a ton of additional perks.

With this card you can earn 3X points on airfare, 2X points on gas and groceries, and 1X points on everything else - year round.

The annual fee is waived for the first year. And you can also take advantage of a great sign-up bonus now: earn 50,000 bonus points when you spend $2,000 during the first 3 months.

If you plan on charging a significant amount of purchases, the American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card can pay off fairly quickly. The good news is that the rewards points you do earn never expire. You'll also earn bonus rewards points if you make a certain number of charges in a calendar year.

Premier Rewards Gold Rewards Program

This Gold card allows you to earn triple, double and single reward points with every dollar that you charge.

If you spend wisely, you'll be able to earn a significant number of points each year. You'll then be able to redeem these points for a wide variety of merchandise, ranging from airline tickets to gift cards to items from the American Express Bonus Points Mall.

Along with the many perks and benefits that come with this card, including Extended Warranty, Purchase Protection and Roadside Assistance -- you can quickly rack up points in certain categories in the AmEx Membership Rewards program. There are no caps to the points you can earn:

  • 3x points for flights booked directly through airlines
  • 2x points at gas stations
  • 2x points at supermarkets
  • 1x points on all other spending

The Membership Rewards program is one of the best in the industry, because you can use your points for almost anything. This includes statement credits, travel, gift cards and merchandise.

You can also use your MR points to make your card a frequent flier card for several airlines by converting your points to frequent flier miles.

You will always get a 1:1 conversion rate and there are more than 20 partner airline frequent flier programs and hotel loyalty programs, including Delta SkyMiles, Virgin Atlantic, Emirates, Best Western, Starwood Preferred Guest, and Hilton HHonors.

Travel and Shopping Benefits

You'll earn triple rewards points with every dollar you charge on airfare, double points for every dollar that you charge on gas or groceries and single points for every dollar that you charge on everything else. You'll also earn triple rewards points when you purchase merchandise from American Express' Bonus Point Mall. The mall, available online, offers a wide range of merchandise and services.

You can use your American Express Membership Rewards to Pay with Points. You can book a flight online through the American Express Travel site to pay for all or part of your flight, booked or prepaid hotel, cruise or vacation booking.

At check-in, you can receive up to $75 hotel credit for qualifying charges and upgrades when you stay at least 2 consecutive nights and use your AmEx card.

Other perks with this card include 24-hour roadside assistance when you're traveling; coverage against lost, stolen or damaged baggage; and access to concerts, theater performances and family events before their tickets go on sale to the general public.

There is no annual fee attached to this card for the first year. After that, the annual fee stands at $195. Late-payment and returned-payment fees are $35.

The Bottom Line

The AmEx Premier Rewards Gold card still has trouble comparing with other travel cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred with 2x per dollar on all travel charges and no foreign transaction fee with a lower annual fee of just $95.

Still, the card can be useful because you can transfer your points to more than 20 frequent traveler programs or use them for merchandise or gift cards.

With the annual fee waived for the first year, it's definitely worth it to take the card for a test drive and enjoy the sign-up bonus.

  • 25,000 bonus points when you spend $2,000 in the first 3 months.
  • 3x points for airfare, 2x points at gas stations and grocery stores and 1x points everywhere else.
  • Card comes with many travel and retail perks.
  • Bonus rewards points if you charge enough in a calendar year.

  • Annual fee of $195.
