The Verdict: Credit cards attached to credit unions enjoy a good reputation in the financial industry. That’s because they usually come with low purchase interest rates. That’s the case, at least, with the Visa Classic and Visa Platinum Rewards or Cash Back credit cards offered by America First Credit Union, a credit union open to residents and employees who live near Salt Lake City, Utah. If you are a member of this union, it makes financial sense to apply for one of these two credit cards.

Overview: Both the Visa Classic and Visa Platinum Rewards or Cash Back credit cards offered by America First Credit Union come with purchase interest rates that are below those offered by most mainstream credit cards. The Rewards or Cash Back card also comes with a solid rewards program. Each card also comes with no annual fee and a cash-advance fee that is lower than most.

How These Cards Work: The Visa Classic from America First Credit Union is a standard credit card. This means that you won’t earn any rewards points or cash back when you use it to make purchases. The Visa Platinum Rewards or Cash Back card, though, allows you to either earn rewards points or cash back whenever you use the card to make a purchase. Once you’ve earned enough rewards points, you can exchange them for airfare, hotel stays, rental cars, merchandise or gift cards.

Travel & Shopping Benefits: Every time you use the Visa Platinum Rewards or Cash Back card from this credit union, you’ll receive either one rewards point for every dollar you charge or one percent cash back from every purchase you make. With the cash-back option, you’ll receive a statement credit every month.

Fees: The Visa Platinum Rewards or Cash Back card comes with a purchase interest rate that ranges from 8.25 percent to 18 percent depending on the strength of your credit. The Visa Classic card comes with a purchase interest rate that can range from 10.5 percent to 18 percent, again depending on your credit. Both cards come with no annual fees and a cash-advance fee of 1.5 percent of the amount of the advance. The cards come with late-payment fees that can run as high as $35 and a returned-payment fee of $10.

Pros:

  • No annual fees.
  • Solid rewards program.
  • Low purchase interest rates.

Cons:

  • Must be member of America First Credit Union to apply for these cards.
