Verdict: These two VISA cards stand out from the crowd in many ways. One is that cardholders have an option of choosing a credit card with an annual fee or one with no annual fee. The rewards points offered differ depending on which card is chosen, but again the option to go annual fee-free is given. Also, you can use them as either debit or credit cards. These cards also have a rewards program that offers a lot of chances to earn points right off the bat.
Overview: If you’re not familiar with the term “signature card”, here is a brief explanation. If you have a credit card that can be used as a debit or credit card, if you choose the debit option (say, for instance, at a gas pump or other point of sale), your transaction goes through immediately.
In other words, you don’t have to sign a transaction slip as you would if you are using the card as a regular credit card, where you are required to sign a slip. However, some credit card companies will let you use the credit card option and not sign a slip if the transaction is below a certain amount.
Again, the two AirTran VISA credit cards are signature cards, but can be used as non-signature cards also.
These are not the only AirTran VISA credit cards offered. There is also a separate AirTran Airways A+ Business Card.
How This Card Works: No matter which card you select—annual fee or no annual fee—you start earning A+ rewards credits in your first 90 days of use. If you select the annual fee card, you earn 10 after $750 in purchases; with the no annual fee one you earn 2 after $250 in purchases. You also earn discount certificates on your card anniversary as well as other perks when you make AirTran transactions or purchases.
Travel and Shopping Benefits: With the annual fee card, you have the opportunity to earn two discount certificates in the amount of $50 from AirTran on the card anniversary. In addition, you also earn 2 points for every $1 spent on AirTran transactions and purchases; 1 point for every $1 on other transactions and purchases.
With the no annual fee card, points are 1 for $1 for AirTran transactions and purchases; 1 for $2 on other transactions and purchases.
Fees: You pay $49 for the AirTran Airways Visa Signature with annual fee. For both cards, balance transfer fees are $10 or 4% of each balance transfer amount, whichever is greater. This does not start until after the first six billing cycles after you open the account, however, until then the fee is either $5 or 3% of the balance transfer amount, whichever is greater. During that time, the maximum fee you will pay is $50; after that there is no maximum limit.
For cash advances, you pay either $10 or 3% of the amount of each one, whichever is greater. This fee also applies to such transactions as money orders, traveler’s checks, foreign currency, and lottery ticket or gaming chip purchases. A wire transfer is also considered a cash advance.
You are also charged a 3% foreign transaction fee, based on the amount in U. S. Dollars, as well as penalty fees, which vary by state, and can be as high as $35. In addition, up to $35 can be charged for returned payment fees.
