Q. I’m trying to buy something online with my credit card and the site keeps asking for my CVV number, but I have no idea what they are talking about.

A. With most cards, it is on the back near where your signature goes. For example, some cards have the space for the signature, the last 4 digits of your credit card number, then your CVV number. Both of my cards are like this. American Express cards have this number on the front, just above the credit card number.

The CVV number helps make purchases more secure. When you use your card in person, such as at a restaurant or store, the information that the company stores usually does not include this number (a few merchants require it). If someone with the company were to try to use your credit card number to make a purchase online, they would not be able to, since online purchases use the CVV number in addition to the credit card number.

CVV numbers are found on debit cards, also. It should be in the same location as on your credit cards; usually on the back, near the last 4 digits of your debit card number. It will be a 3-4 digit number.
