Q: The American Express Platinum card was recently recommended to me, but I’m not sure if my credit score is high enough to apply. What is required to apply for this card
A: The AmEx Platinum card requires good or excellent credit. It is a very prestigious charge card with many exclusive benefits (and a hefty $450 annual fee), and as such, American Express is very picky about who qualifies. To have a good chance of qualifying, you should have a credit score of 700 or above, although this alone is no guarantee that you will qualify.
Other factors can also help you qualify for a Platinum card. If you already have a card with AmEx, such as the Gold card, and have made your payments on time, they will be more likely to consider upgrading you to a Platinum card. American Express also likes to see a low credit utilization on any other credit cards that you have, and no history of late payments in the past two years. Income is also a factor.
If you apply and do not qualify, you may want to try another card, such as Discover More or the American Express Zync card. Zync is also a charge card, and if you make consistent on time payments on this card, next time you apply for the Platinum card, you will be more likely to be approved.
