Q: I applied for a Chase Sapphire card, but I was denied. Is there anything I can do so I can be approved for a similar card?

A: It’s never fun getting denied for a credit card. If you do, though, there are a number of steps you can take. You can wait for a while and try to improve your credit, but sometimes you need credit now. You can try applying for other cards on the same level, but you may not qualify for those either, and it will hurt your credit to apply for too many cards. Or you can apply for cards that don’t require quite as high a credit score.

Chase Sapphire requires an excellent credit score, around 750 and up. If you are denied and want to increase your chances of qualifying for the next card you apply for, apply for cards for those with good credit. Cards like the Discover More card are not quite as exclusive, and will grant credit to those with a score of 700 – 750 as well as those with phenomenal scores. This card is also a rewards card, and offers 5% cash back on purchases in certain categories that rotate every three months, and 1% cash back on everything else.

The Chase Freedom card is another card for those with good, but not necessarily excellent, credit. Just like the Discover More card, your credit score only needs to be around 700, as long as your job history is solid and you don’t have any recent late payments. Also similar to Discover’s card, Chase Freedom offers 5% cash back on rotating categories and 1% cash back on everything else.
