Q: I have a Discover More card and I want to sign up for the rotating category rewards program that I’ve read about on your site. How can I do this?

A: To sign up, you have to have a Discover More card. Go to the rewards site and enter your account number and password, then click “Sign Up Now.” You can also enroll over the phone at 1-800-Discover. Each quarter, you must opt in before you can start accumulating the cash back rewards.

The way it works is you receive 5% cash back on certain categories that change every 3 months. You receive the 5% up to $800 per quarter, then each purchase afterward receives 1% cash back. Following are the categories that are available in 2011. 1st quarter: travel and restaurants, plus grocery and drug stores in March only; 2nd quarter: home and fashion; 3rd quarter: gas, hotels, movies, and theme parks, and 4th quarter: restaurants and fashion.

One way to make the most of your cash back is to redeem it for gift certificates. You can receive many $50 gift certificates for $45, and many are $20 for $25. If you already shop at these places, it’s a great deal, since you get an extra 10-20% off. Some examples of gift certificates you can receive are Applebee’s, Dave & Buster’s, Starbucks, Lowe’s, Staples, Gap, and AMC. Log in to the account center to see your options.
