Your credit and credit rating are very important. Whether or not you can achieve certain things, such as home ownership or buying a new car, just to name a couple, rests largely on these two things. For this reason, it is very important to protect your credit, and here are a few ways of doing that:

* Pay on time: This is the most important way to protect your credit. Try to arrange it so that your payment arrives either on the day it is due or a few days before, as some places will count it as late if it is not posted to your account on the due date.

* Only use credit when it is absolutely necessary: It may be tempting to “swipe the card” for every purchase, big or small, but remember, eventually you will have to pay it back.

* Protect your cards: Keep them in a secure place in your wallet, and know where they are at all times. Write down the name of the company who issued the card and the account number, and keep this information separate.

* Protect your identity: Identity theft can affect your credit adversely very quickly. Keep your personal information safe. If you do notice that your identity is being used unlawfully or without your permission, report it to law enforcement and credit reporting companies immediately.
