Q: What are the insurance benefits that come with Amex platinum card?
A: As many of you AMEX Platinum holders already know, your card offers travel insurance to help out if something goes wrong while you’re on vacation.
This insurance covers you, up to 5 authorized users, your spouse, and children up to age 25, and it applies whether you’re in the United States or traveling abroad.
For a fee of $9.95 per ticket, you will receive baggage protection up to $1,000 for checked and $2,000 for carry on. If your bag is delayed 3 hours or more, you can purchase up to $500 in replacement clothing.
You’re covered at your hotel, too. If anything is lost or stolen from the hotel, you are covered for up to $2,000.
Another insurance benefit is AMEX car rental insurance.
You don’t have to pay extra for car insurance now when you rent a car; you’re already covered if you use your AMEX card for the rental. This insurance is secondary insurance, meaning whatever your regular car insurance won’t cover, American Express will.
Beware, however, of one catch with the auto rental insurance. Unlike some of the other benefits, this coverage only extends to the person(s) named on the card. So, if your wife isn’t on your card and she rents a car, she isn’t covered. This coverage lasts for 30 days from when you rent the car, and covers up to $75,000 worth of damage. They may even help you cover your deductible for your primary insurance.
If you run into trouble while traveling and have to file a claim, you can do this by calling 1-800-645-9700. They will give you further instructions.
But keep in mind that you must have proof for the claim. If your baggage arrives 3 hours late, you must provide proof of this. If something is stolen from your hotel room or luggage, you must file a police report. American Express will then refund you once you submit the necessary documents.
