American Express is known for their excellent extended warranty and purchase protection programs. In 2009, Discover also introduced Purchase Protection for Premium cardmembers.
In June 2012, they extended Purchase Protection and Extended Product Warranty benefits to all cardmembers.
Here’s a look at how Discover protects and insures your purchases.
How Discover Purchase Protection Works
The Purchase Protection program from Discover is similar to American Express, automatically covering your purchases against theft and damage for 90 days and up to $500 at no additional cost to you. Of course, the entire purchase must be made with your Discover card.
You’ll also need to contact a representative within 45 days of the damage or theft to file your claim.
There are some exceptions to the coverage as your item cannot be stolen from a vehicle or in a situation in which you failed to exercise due diligence.
Other exceptions include: natural disaster, wear and tear, product defects, damage caused by a power surge, antiques, perishables, animals and plants, motorized vehicles, boats, professional advice, refurbished goods and more.
Important Warning: If you pay for a purchase with the cash back bonus option instead of your actual card it is NOT covered. Because the transaction doesn’t actually go on your credit card, you will not receive purchase protection on the item.
Extended Product Warranty through Discover
In June 2012, Discover decided to offer their Extended Product Warranty benefit to all cardmembers, in addition to Roadside Dispatch. The included warranty program doubles your original manufacturer’s warranty up to one year, as long as the original warranty is less than 3 years. Basically, a 2-year warranty will now become a 3-year warranty, but a 3-year original warranty remains unchanged. This benefit is automatic so there’s no need to enroll.
You’ll need to call a representative within 45 days of loss or damage to take advantage of the program, which duplicates the terms and conditions of your original US Manufacturer Warranty and any Purchase Warranty in place up to $10,000 for repairs or replacement if repairs can’t be made.
Are You Covered?
Thanks to Discover’s new policy which went into effect only 3 months ago, all Discover cardmembers are now covered by Purchase Protection and Extended Product Warranty benefits when they use their Discover card. This was a much-needed change that allows the Discover cards to compete more effectively with American Express and makes their benefits easier to understand.
If your Discover card did not have these benefits before June, keep in mind purchases before the effective date will not be covered by Purchase Protection or Extended Warranty.
