Murphy USA Credit Card Review
We continue our journey into the world of gas rewards today with our review of the Murphy USA credit card and gas rewards program. This article was updated May 27th, 2018.
The Murphy USA Private Label credit card is a fleet gas card that is tailored for Murphy USA and Murphy Express customers. Every purchase with this card qualifies for a rebate of at least 1 cent per gallon. Other than that, it offers few other benefits.
As mentioned, purchases with the Murphy USA Private Label card qualify for at least 1 cent off per gallon at Murphy USA and Murphy Express locations. Your fleet will never pay full price as long as this credit card handy.
Cardholders can also earn additional savings as the volume of monthly gasoline purchases increases. The following is a list of rebates that are offered at various volumes of monthly gas purchases:
- 1 to 999 gallons – 1 cent
- 1,000 to 3,999 gallons – 2 cents
- 4,000 to 9,999 gallons – 3 cents
- 10,000+ gallons – 4 cents
Basically, with the national average price of regular gasoline nearing $3 per gallon and other fuel grades being more expensive, the best you’ll do with this card is earn 1 percent or so in rebates.
In addition, this card offers benefits that could help your business cut down on costs.
View Reports & Cap Spending
You’ll have access to month-to-date and year-to-date reporting. Also, you can set online purchase controls to limit unauthorized purchases.
This means that the driver who always seems to fill his 20 gallon tank with 30 gallons of fuel won’t be getting freebies for his own car anymore!
With this card, you’ll also have information as to when and where every purchase was made and by whom. You’ll also have monthly reports to help analyze your business’ fuel spending.
Other than the mentioned rebates and administrative benefits, there isn’t much more to this card. There usually isn’t with other fleet cards, either, so this doesn’t necessarily make this a bad card when compared to the others.

How It Compares to Other Cards
Murphy USA Private Label vs. Chevron and Texaco Business Card
The Chevron and Texaco Business Card offers rebates of up to 6 cents per gallon. However, the first 1,000 gallons don’t qualify for any rewards with this card. The following is a summary of it’s rebates per gallon:
- 0 to 1,000 gallons – none
- 1,001 to 2,000 gallons – 1 cent
- 2,001 to 4,000 gallons – 2 cents
- 4,001 to 6,000 gallons – 3 cents
- 6,001 to 8,000 gallons – 4 cents
- 8,000 to 10,000 gallons – 5 cents
- 10,001+ gallons – 6 cents
There is no annual or monthly fee with the Chevron and Texaco Business card, giving it a slight edge over the $1 monthly fee with the Murphy USA Private Label Card.
In terms of administrative benefits, these cards are fairly evenly matched, so the card that you choose should come down to the monthly volume of fuel that your fleet consumes. If it’s less than 1,000 gallons, go with Murphy USA’s offer. If your fleet consumes much more than that, then Chevron and Texaco’s offer will probably work better in terms of rewards.
Murphy USA Private Label vs. CITGO Business Select
The CITGO Business Select card offers 5 cents per gallon during the first 3 months. That blows away Murphy USA’s deal during that time, as you couldn’t possibly earn that much with the Murphy USA Private Label card over the first 3 months.
After 3 months has passed, you’ll earn the following rebates with the CITGO Business Select card at the listed monthly fuel volumes:
- 500 to 2,499 gallons – 1 cent
- 2,500 to 4,999 gallons – 2 cents
- 5,000 to 6,999 gallons – 3 cents
- 7,000 to 9,999 gallons – 4 cents
- 10,000+ gallons – 5 cents
The administrative benefits on this card are similar to Murphy USA’s, so you won’t lose much by taking either card over the other in this regard.
However, there is a $10 monthly fee with this card if your fleet uses less than 10,000 gallons, which will significantly erode your rewards or even end up costing you more than it’s worth. In fact, if your fleet uses less than 1,500 gallons, you’ll end up paying more in monthly fees than you’ll get in rebates.
Even if your fleet consumes several thousand gallons or more, the Murphy USA Private Label card will work better. For example, at 6,000 gallons per month, you’d net $128.97 worth of rebates with Murphy USA’s offer and $89.97 with CITGO’s offer. Go with Murphy USA’s offer for your fleet if you are comparing these 2 cards.
