Want to get the credit limit increased on your Discover it card? You have a few options, including contacting a Discover customer service representative, using their automated system over the phone and requesting a credit limit increase online.

Update 1: In many cases, the quickest way to increase your available credit is to apply for an additional card with a new bank. For current Discover cardholders, we recommend applying for a complimentary rewards card like the Capital One Venture Card – which has generous credit limits and a solid rewards program that allows you to earn airline miles and travel rewards on all of your purchases. You can now apply online here.

Update 2: You can now use our credit limit increase calculator to see if you may qualify for a credit limit increase with Discover and other card issuers.

Why You Should Check Your Scores First

First – Discover will do a hard-pull on your credit to see if you are eligible for a credit limit increase, so you want to make sure that your scores are 720+ for the best chance of approval and the information on your credit report is accurate.

Secondly – Since Discover will do a hard-pull on your credit report, you want to make sure you don’t have more than two or three other inquires as too many will lower your scores because it may look like you are desperate for more credit.

Make an Online Request

You can request a credit limit increase by logging into your account through Discover’s Online Account Management system. Once you put in the request, you can check for messages from Discover to find out if you were approved.

Automated Request Over the Phone

To request a credit limit increase over the phone, call Discover at 1-800-DISCOVER and enter your zip code and the last 4 digits of your card number and Social Security number when prompted. Listen to the options and select the option for a credit limit increase request and follow the prompts. You’ll be asked to enter the set amount you want to increase your limit. In some cases, you might get an instant decision, although you may be asked to wait for a decision by mail.

You can also speak directly with a customer service agent to request the increase and provide any new information, such as increased income. The representative will also ask you some basic questions, such as why you want a credit limit increase, what you do at your job, when you expect to graduate (if attending school) and your degree.

You will be advised that considering you for a limit increase requires a hard pull on your credit report, which will remain for up to 2 years and may negatively impact your credit score if you have too many credit inquires.

Improve Your Chances of a Credit Limit Increase

Want to boost your chances of getting that increase approved? Here are some things that may help:

  1. Don’t request an increase more often than every 6 months.
  2. Having other credit cards with higher limits increases your chances of getting your to request approved. For example, if you have a $3,000 limit but your other credit cards have limited no higher than $500, there’s less chance that Discover will want to take a risk with you and boost your limit higher.
  3. There are many factors that determine whether your request will be approved, including your income, payment history, and other credit limits. Showing you have a steady history of on-time payments, or increased income may improve your odds.
  4. Be conservative in your request. If your limit is currently $1,000, for example, don’t request that your limit be increased to $5,000. You are more likely to get approved with a request for an increase of $500.

Automatic Credit Limit Increases from Discover

Discover, like some credit card companies, is also known for automatically increasing your credit limit every 6 months or so with responsible use. You may find your limit goes up a few hundred dollars every 3 months, depending on where it began and your credit score. The best way to earn automatic credit limit increases is by making on-time payments and using your card regularly.

Keep in mind it’s not necessary to spend near your limit to get approved for a credit limit increase or get an automatic increase. As long as you pay your bill on time and use the card, you should receive regular credit limit increase. If you’ve done this and notice your limit hasn’t changed in 6-12 months, try one of the above methods to get Discover to consider you.
