The Amtrak Guest Rewards World MasterCard is designed for individuals with excellent credit. With many people now turning to Amtrak to avoid the cost of air travel, you may be interested in their rewards card. This credit card has no annual fee and a rewards program, but you should think twice before applying, here’s why…
Think the rewards program for the Amtrak card sounds decent?
The points you earn with your Amtrak credit card are exactly the same as you earn with the free Amtrak Guest Rewards program that requires no credit card.
The best rewards you can earn are the travel vouchers, as the exchange rate between your points and ticket redemption is very favorable. You can also trade Amtrak points for points at many popular rewards programs if you’re willing to give up some value. Because anyone can join the Amtrak Guest Rewards program and earn 2 points per $1 on Amtrak purchases, you may be better off sticking with the free program.
It is worth noting, however, that Amtrak offers many promotional deals only available to Amtrak credit card members. You may find your points go much farther in these cases.
Another reason this card makes us cringe is the fact that if you don’t qualify for the World card, you will be automatically considered for the Platinum card. Sounds great right? Wrong, Platinum card has a much higher APR and lacks many of the better benefits like the extended warranty protection!
Overview of the Amtrak Guest Rewards Card
- No annual fee
- 13.24% APR on purchases and balance transfers; 19.24% APR for cash advances
- 29.99% penalty APR
- 3% fee for balance transfers, cash advances and foreign transactions
- 1 point earned per $1 spent on regular purchases
- 2 points earned per $1 spent on Amtrak purchases
- Points may be used for travel rewards, ClubAcela passes, gift cards and train upgrades or tickets
The Amtrak Guest Rewards credit card does have a fairly low APR, but the rewards program is nothing special. If you want to earn Amtrak rewards, stick with the regular Amtrak Guest Rewards program for Amtrak purchases and use a better travel rewards credit card for everything else. The extra 1 point per $1 you earn with the Amtrak card on regular purchases is nothing exciting and you can do much better than that if you have excellent credit.
