We’ve all had buyer’s remorse after making a big purchase. Maybe those purple drapes looked perfect in the showroom but awful at home. Maybe that microwave oven sounded a lot quieter in the store. Or maybe you had no idea that your son already had that expensive video game.
You’d love to return these unwanted purchases. Problem is, the retailers, for whatever reason, won’t take the items back. This means that you’re stuck with them, right?
Actually, no, not if you’re an American Express credit card holder.
All American Express credit card accounts come with free American Express Return Protection (not to be confused with American Express Premium Return Protection). Under this program, you can return items that you’ve purchased with your American Express card but no longer want directly to American Express if the original retailers won’t take the purchases back.
American Express will then refund your purchase price directly to your credit card account.
The best part? American Express credit card holders don’t have to sign up for this protection or pay a cent for it: It’s included with all American Express credit card accounts.
How Return Protection Works
Cardholders have 90 days after purchasing an item to return it directly to American Express. To start the process, consumers must call Return Protection at 1-800-297-8019. They then have up to 30 days from this call to send the product back to American Express.
Cardholders can receive up to $300 for each purchased item, and up to $1,000 worth of return protection annually for each American Express credit card account they own.
Cardholders must also send American Express the original store receipt for each item they want to return and the American Express card record of the charge.
It’s important to remember that American Express will only provide consumers refunds for items that they purchased entirely with their American Express cards. If consumers bought an unwanted throw rug with their Visa or Discover cards, they’re out of luck.
Return Protection is just one more benefit to owning an American Express card. American Express is well known for its many member benefits. The ability to return unwanted purchases is just one of a long list of reasons why American Express remains the most respected credit card in the industry.
