American Express has a pretty nice mobile app for both iOS (iPhone, iPod touch) and Android (EVO 4G, Galaxy S) devices. You can use it to check your balance, pay your credit card bill, see recent transactions, and view your rewards points, as well as a few other things. The two apps look very similar and have most of the same functionality, but this article was written mainly using the iPhone app, so keep that in mind if you notice some small differences with the Android version.

The app seems to work pretty well. One drawback of any Android app is that it won’t work with every device, just because of the sheer number of Android devices out there with different interfaces and features. The Apple app, of course, is optimized for the iPhone, so any major problems are usually fixed pretty quickly.

Keep reading for how to find this app, as well as some of the pros and cons.

Locating the App

To find this app on your Android phone or iPhone, just search the Android Market or the App Store for “American Express” or “Amex.” If you have a QR code reader on your Android phone, you can also scan the code at this link and it will bring you to a screen where you can download the app. For those who have other devices such as BlackBerry, there isn’t an app yet, but you can use the American Express mobile site by going to on your phone.

Can I Pay My Bill With This App?

Yes! One of the best features of this app is being able to pay your bill from your phone. Are you waiting in the doctor’s office and realized you forgot to pay? Just pull out your phone, log in, view your balance (just tap the name of the correct card to see account details), and hit the button “Pay Bill.” It will take you to a screen where you can select which bank account you want to pay your bill from and choose the amount you want to pay. You can then choose to pay now or set a future date for the payment. This only works if you have a bank account connected to your American Express account, but after you set it up, it makes paying your credit card balance a lot easier.

Other Features

Besides checking and paying your credit card bill, you can do a few other things with this app. If you have an American Express gift card, you can check your gift card balance. Then there’s the Entertainment Access section, where you can view and schedule upcoming events, such as buying concert tickets. If you have one of the qualifying American Express cards, you can sometimes score preferred seating at no extra charge. You have to use your AMEX card to make the purchase, however.

If you want special, cardmember-only offers, choose the “Selects” link on the home page. You will see a list of travel, shopping, dining, and entertainment offers specially designed for AMEX users. Below the Selects tab is More Mobile Services—a set of links instructing you on how to sign up for account alerts, how to access the mobile site, and how to sign up for text alerts. Useful for some, but come on, American Express. Can’t you link directly to the mobile site instead of telling us what to type into our browser?

Those apps can all be accessed from the home page, but there are a few more links that you will see on the bottom of the screen when you log into your account. If you need help, there’s a button to help you with that. There’s even a Contact Us button that allows you to tweet a question to @AskAmex. If enough people mention the same issue, American Express will see it and fix the problem in a future update.

Will It Work on Tablets?

This app doesn’t work on most tablets. It doesn’t work on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, or the Motorola Xoom. Some people have reported success with the iPad, so go ahead and try it out yourself if you have Apple’s tablet or another Android tablet.

What’s Missing?

One feature a lot of customers mentioned that they felt was missing from this app is a list of pending transactions. It makes it a little bit harder to keep track of what you spent when you can’t see that transactions as they are being processed. Besides that, you can’t set up an account from the app; you have to visit the site on your computer to create your online account and connect a bank account to pay your bill with.

Besides a couple of missing features such as pending transactions and lack of compatibility with most tablets, this is a pretty solid app. It can save you time by allowing you to check your balance without having to start up your computer, and it can save you money in late fees by giving you access to the due date and balance due, plus the option to set up a payment for whenever you like. If you have an American Express card in your wallet and you haven’t tried this app yet, you should.
