Q: If I apply for an American Express card, which credit bureau will they use to look at my score and history?
A: American Express uses all three bureaus from time to time, but Experian seems to be their favorite. For the majority of credit card applicants, they will pull the score from Experian. In some cases they will go with Equifax, and they will on rare occasions use TransUnion.
If your Experian score is a little bit higher than the other two, this is good news for you. If not, you may still be in the clear. Just check what range of credit scores American Express is looking for with your card of choice. We have some resources on this site that discuss what scores you may need, and you can find out more information with a quick web search.
Once you know what score range is needed for the card you’re applying for, see if you’re in it. If your score is a little low, but you have other things going for you, such as a high income and a stable job, you may still have a shot. If your credit score is on the low end, you’re maxed out on your cards, and you don’t make much money, then you might want to give that card a pass until you’ve had some time to straighten out your credit.
Predicting whether a credit card company will approve or deny you isn’t an exact science. Credit card issuers will change the score requirements from time to time, and there usually isn’t an exact cut off. If you really want a particular card but are not sure if you will qualify, you can always give it a shot.
