Verdict: The Visa Black card, made of carbon graphite, is a direct competitor to American Express’s famous Centurion card. However, the Visa Black fails to offer any special benefits to cardholders that aren’t available with a lower interest rate and lower credit rating.

Overview:
The Visa Black Card offers 1% cash back, concierge service, a rewards program, and a priority pass, which can be used twice a year. The high annual fee and a rather high APR of 13.99% make this a card that should be passed by.

How This Card Works:
The Visa Black card earns 1% cash back on all purchases or 1 point per dollar that can be redeemed for travel. The priority pass allows you access to more than 500 airport lounges around the world, but only twice per year. You also receive luxury gifts from top brands, with no specific mention of what they are. The Black card comes with 24-hour concierge service.

Travel and Shopping Benefits:
The Black card gives 1% cash back on all purchases, or you can choose to earn 1 point per dollar that can be redeemed for travel at any time. It also comes with a priority pass, allowing you twice a year entrance to airport lounges around the world. A listed benefit of the card is luxury gifts from top brands, although details are not given.

Fees:
The annual fee for the Visa Black card is $495. An additional annual fee of $195 applies for each authorized user. There’s a 6 month introductory APR of 6 months on balance transfers. The APR for the Black card is 13.24% variable, with a default rate of 27.24%. The grace period is 20 days. Cash advances are subject to a transaction charge of 3%, minimum $10. Balance transfers are subject to the same transaction charge with a minimum of $5. Late payment fees are $25 for balances under $100, $29 for balances between $100 and $999.99, and $39 for balances over $1,000. The over the credit line charge is $25 for balances under $1,000 and $39 for balances over $1,000. Returned payments are charged a fee of $29.

Pros:

  • Unique- made of carbon graphite
  • Luxury gifts
  • Priority pass
  • 0% APR for 6 months on balance transfers

Cons:

  • $495 annual fee
  • $195 additional annual fee per authorized user
  • Charges a fee for going over your credit limit
  • Priority pass can only be used twice per year
  • Only 1% cash back
  • Considerably high 13.24% APR

Sometimes I get the feeling that the Visa Black Card is trying too hard to skate by just on appearances rather than actual benefits. Sure the rewards, cash back, and concierge service is nice but the cash back is not all that great and nothing really jumps out as being super impressive or exclusive. Granted the all black carbonite card is definitely a huge plus for the cool factor and there are few cards that are more flashy and impressive looking if one wants to whip the card out to impress someone.
