In today’s challenging economy, we’re all trying to get the most bang for our buck. This is especially true when buying gasoline. Here are some of the best credit cards to use when filling the tank.

American Express True Earnings Card: This card is for American Express members affiliated with Costco, but if you are a member of both, it is worth it. The card gives 3 percent back for gas and restaurant purchases and less amounts for other items. These are given as vouchers for cash or Costco merchandise. There are no annual fees outside the Costco membership.

Capital One No Hassle Miles Rewards: This card awards three miles per dollar spent on gas and travel purchases. There are no limits on the miles earned, which don’t expire as long as your account is open.

Capital One No Hassle Points: Cardholders receive five points per dollar earned when using the card at gas stations, grocery and drug stores. These points can be redeemed for cash, travel merchandise or gift certificates.

Capital One No Hassle Rewards: Similar to the No Hassle Points card from the same company, this card awards double points when used at gas stations, grocery or drug stores and one point per dollar for other purchases. This card offers a lower interest rate and is intended for those with excellent credit.

Chase Freedom: Cardholders can receive 3 percent cash back on gasoline and other everyday items, including fast food and groceries for six months. Other purchases get unlimited 1 percent cash back

Chase PerfectCard: This card awards a 6 percent rebate on gas purchases for the first three months and 3 percent thereafter. The rebates are automatically credited toward future purchases. In addition to the gas rebates, other purchases receive a 1 percent rebate.

Discover Open Road Card: This card gives 5 percent cash back for gas and car care purchases.

ExxonMobil MasterCard: This card earns 15 points per gallon rebates on gas purchases at Exxon and Mobil stations across the U.S. Cardholders can receive up to two percent rebates on the first $10,000 spent on other eligible purchases and an additional 1 percent on eligible purchases over $10,000.

Shell MasterCard: This card offers a five percent rebate on gas bought at Shell gas stations. Other purchases qualify for a 1 percent rebate.

While many people ignore points and other rewards for gas cards and other credit cards, it is worthwhile to look at the details. Cardholders can help save a lot of money on merchandise, travel, insurance and other items. Gas cards associated with particular gas stations and stores generally charge a few pennies less per gallon than the general public. Those savings can really add up.

The best gas cards are the ones that help you to save money at the gas stations and stores you use most often. Check out the best options for your needs and get rolling today.
