Verdict: The Shell credit card has a very high APR of 18.24% with no benefits to use, making it virtually worthless. The Shell Select Member card though has 10% cash back on hotels and motels and 5% cash back on airlines and car travel, making it worth its $25 annual fee.

Overview:
There are two credit cards available from Shell: the Shell credit card, which has no benefits and can only be used at Shell stations, and the Shell Select Member card, which gives up to 10% cash back on motels and hotels, as well as 5% cash back on car and airline travel. The Select Member card also has a few other travel benefits with a low annual fee of $25.

How This Card Works:
The Shell credit card is good only at Shell stations and has a very high APR of 18.24%. There’s no annual fee and 0% fraud liability, though, with no benefits to using this card, it has no value.

The Shell Select Member card, on the other hand, has a large amount of travel benefits, including hotel discounts and cash back on travel, hotels, and car rentals. The APR is the same for the Select Member card, and there is a small annual fee of $25.

Travel and Shopping Benefits:
The travel benefits for the Shell Select Member card include the following: 10% cash back on hotels and motels when booked through the Select Member Reservation Center, 5% cash back on airlines and car rentals also booked through the Select Member Reservation Center, hotel discounts up to 50% at over 13,000 hotels, and low travel reservation prices. You also get insurance protections ($200,000 flight insurance, $25,000 common carrier insurance, and $1,000 credit life insurance) and up to $1,000 cash and/or a prepaid airline ticket in case of emergency.

Fees:
For the Shell credit card, the APR is a variable 18.24% for purchases and cash advances. The default rate is 27.24%. The grace period for this credit card is 25 days, as long as you pay your balance in full each month. The cash advance fee is also 5%, with a minimum fee of $5. Late fees are $15 for balances between $51 and $151 and $29 for balances above $151.
The fees for the Shell Select Member card are the same as the Shell credit card, although a $25 annual fee applies.

Pros:

  • Low late fees
  • Hotel discounts with Select Member card
  • 5% cash back on airline travel and car rentals with Select Member card
  • 10% cash back on hotels and motels with Select Member card
  • Travel insurance with Select Member card
  • No annual fee for Shell credit card
  • $25 annual fee with Select Member card
  • 0% fraud liability

Cons:

  • Very high APR
  • No benefit to Shell credit card
