Quick Highlight of the Differences

The JetBlue Card is the basic version of the card with no annual fee. The card offers a bonus offer of 5,000 points after spending just $1,000 during the first 90 days. The card earns 3x points on JetBlue purchases, 2x points at grocery stores, and 1x points on everything else. Aside from the 50% discount on in-flight purchases, the standard card offers no other benefits.

The JetBlue Plus Card and the JetBlue Business Card are nearly identical, except the Business version earns 2x points at office supply stores and restaurants instead of grocery stores and restaurants. Both cards include all other benefits like free checked bags, anniversary bonus points, the 10% redemption bonus, and the chance to earn Mosaic benefits.

And, most importantly, both the JetBlue Plus card and Business card offer you the opportunity to earn 30,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days.

Both the regular JetBlue Card and the JetBlue Plus Card currently offer a 0% introductory APR for first 12 billing cycles on balance transfers made within 45 days of account opening. After that a variable APR will apply, which will be 12.74%, 20.74% or 25.74%, based on your creditworthiness.

What About Old AmEx Cardholders?

Those jetBlue cardholders who had the old JetBlue AmEx were transitioned to a new JetBlue Rewards card.

This version of the card has the same $40 annual fee as the old Amex card, but it earns 4x points on JetBlue purchases instead of 3x points.

As an added bonus to those customers, the Rewards version lets you earn a one-time $100 companion travel discount if you spend $500 on your new card by June 30, 2016.

The JetBlue Rewards card does not offer the free checked bag benefit, the 5,000 point annual bonus or other perks of the Plus Card. If you want those, you will need to switch to the newer Plus Card.

How Does TrueBlue Mosaic Work?

You can earn Mosaic benefits once you spend at least $50,000 per year with the JetBlue Plus card. Mosaic offers several important benefits:

  • Your first and second checked bags are free.
  • All JetBlue flight change and cancelation fees will be waived for you and others on your itinerary.
  • Get 15,000 bonus points.
  • Get to your gate faster with access to the expedited security line.
  • Board early.
  • Complimentary in-flight alcoholic beverages.
  • Earn an extra 3x TrueBlue points on JetBlue flights.
  • Dedicated customer service line.

Redeeming Points with JetBlue TrueBlue Program

With the JetBlue TrueBlue reward program, you will have no blackout dates and you can redeem your points for any seat on any JetBlue flight. You can also earn and share points with family pooling to earn reward seats even faster.

Unlike many airline rewards programs, the number of points you need to redeem for a flight is tied to current fares. The lower the fare, the fewer points you need.

Is the New Partnership and Upgrade for JetBlue Travelers?

Few will mourn the end of the AmEx/JetBlue partnership, as the old JetBlue card was lackluster, to say the least. The new JetBlue cards from Barclaycard offer better rewards for casual JetBlue travelers and frequent flyers alike.

While most co-branded airline cards offer just 2 points per $1 on airline spending -- even with expensive premium cards -- the basic Barclaycard JetBlue card gives you 3x points for all JetBlue purchases.

The $99 JetBlue Plus version offers an even better 6x points. There's also the potential to earn much more when you book travel online with your new Barclaycard. Along with the 6x points you earn with the JetBlue Plus card, you can earn 3x points with the TrueBlue reward program and another 3x points when you book through JetBlue.com. There's even the potential to earn more points when you book higher fare classes, boosting your TrueBlue bonus from 3x to 4x or 5x.

If you earn Mosaic elite status by spending at least $50,000 a year, you can earn up to 17x on JetBlue flights -- then get a 10% bonus when you redeem your points!

By comparison, the United MileagePlus and Delta SkyMiles programs max out at 13x once you achieve the highest elite status and use the co-branded cards.

Final Thoughts

If you're a frequent JetBlue traveler, the new JetBlue Plus card offers great perks and the potential to earn more points than any other reward program out there.

But, if you prefer to get the best price rather than sticking with a single airline -- or you like the flexibility of being able to use your points how you like -- you may be better off with a non-branded travel rewards card - you can check out our Guide to Travel Rewards Cards here.

Still, among the branded airline rewards cards out there, I think the jetBlue card offers the best program available.
