How To: Donate Your Credit Card Rewards To Charity

Donations to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti continue to pour into charities. Last week’s “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon raised $58 million alone. All of this got me thinking though – what’s really the best way to donate money with a credit card?

American Express Card Members

If you have an AMEX card, you can donate through the GivingExpress program. This program also allows you to donate any earned rewards points to a charity of your choice. You can also make a donate with your card and earn one point for each dollar that you donate.

One of the great things about this program is that you can actually set up reoccurring donations, so that you can automatically give a specified amount each month.

American Express also makes it fairly easy to track donations that you make so when tax time comes around you have a confirmation and detailed record for each donation that you make.

Citi Card Members

Citi allows you to donate any Thank You points earned to the American Red Cross. You can choose to donate points in $50 (5,000 points) or $100 (10,000 points) intervals. All donations will go to the American Red Cross international response fund which provides relief for disasters (such as the earthquake in Haiti), humanitarian crises, and health emergencies around the world.

Discover Card Members

When I was reviewing this year’s Discover Cashback schedule yesterday, I found that like AMEX, one of the ways to redeem your cash back is to donate it to an eligible charity such as the American Red Cross. This is a great option for those of you who may be on a tight budget but have earned a lot of cash back that you haven’t redeemed. When it comes to redeeming you have two options, you can either log into your account online, or call Discover at 1-800-347-2683.

Discover is also currently waving transaction fees on donations to the following charities for Haiti Relief:

  • American Red Cross
  • Americares
  • CARE USA
  • Direct Relief International
  • Doctors Without Borders
  • Habitat for Humanity
  • International Rescue Committee
  • Mercy Corps
  • Oxfam America
  • Save the Children
  • U.S. Fund for Unicef
  • World Vision

Have you successfully redeemed your credit card points for a charitable donation? If so which charity did you donate to?
