Verdict: If you are a student looking for a credit card to start building credit, the Discover® Student Card is the card for you. In addition the card has a great rewards program and an APR that is about 1% lower than most other student credit cards. Once you build up some credit, however, you’d likely be better off switching to a more attractive card.
The Discover® Student Card was created for students to help them start building credit. If you are a student and haven’t established your credit score, finding a good credit card can be a difficult process. The Discover Student Card is a surprisingly good card however and has a great rewards program that you can earn up to 5% cash back with on certain purchases.
Not only is the rewards program on this card good, but it has fairly low rates which is rare for a student credit card. A minor thing that I thought was actually pretty cool about this card was option to customize the art of the card. There are 10 different designs to choose from.
How it Works
With the Discover Student Card you earn 5% cash back on purchases from selected merchants (these are called Get More Purchase Partners). The list of Get More Purchase Partners is pretty extensive and always changing however some of them include: Bed Bath & Beyond, Bennigan’s, Sprint, Blockbuster, Hyatt Hotels, Royal Caribbean, Pep Boys, Pier 1 Imports, Fandango, L.L. Bean, Chili’s Bar and Grill, and a ton of others. You then earn 1% cash back on all other purchases. To get the 1% back on all other purchases you have to spend at least $3000 annually. There are no limits on the amount of rewards you can earn. You can redeem your cash back rewards in $20 increments.
Double your Rewards – You can double your cash back rewards to 2% if you exchange your cash back rewards for gift certificates from selected Discover partners. An example of this would be that if you exchange $60 in rewards to gift certificates you would recieve a gift certificate for $120. Some selected partners include:
Fees
The Discover Student Card has no annual fee. When you sign up for the card you get a 0% introductory APR for 6 months. The APR is then 14.99%. Although this is not extremely low it is one of the lowest rates you will find for a student credit card.
Pros
- Pay Your Bill Online – Discover has an easy to use website that allows you to access your account and pay your bills online. You can also recieve email reminders so you never are late with a payment
- Shop Discover Card -Through the Discover website you can shop at selected merchants and receive additional cash back and discounts of up to 20%. This is another great way to save additional money. Some of these partners merchants include Barnes and Nobles and FTD.
Cons
- Higher APR than you can get with other more lucrative cards.
Conclusion
Overall the Discover® Student Card is good if you are a student and looking to build your credit. I was pretty impressed with the rewards program. The 5% cash back is a great incentive and there are enough merchants participating in the program to make it actually worth while. Although this card doesn’t have the lowest APR around for a student card its very good (its APR is about 1% lower than most other student cards). On an additional note, if you have been rejected for other cards because of your lack of credit you may want to try applying for this card.
If you are looking for a student credit card, we recommend it.

Hello Kevin,
Thanks for the review. It was really helpful.
I want to know if there are any great differences between Discover More Card and Discover Student Card apart from the intro/normal APR.
I have a high credit score and so applied for Discover More Card. But since I checked the student option during application, they approved me for a Discover Student Card.
Thanks!
