Summer means a lot of things: Baseball games, picnics, trips to the beach and plenty of air conditioning.

But for many U.S. families summer also means the time to hit the road. Yes, summer is the official season of the vacation. And if you happen to own an American Express card, the odds are good that you can not only take that summer vacation, you can save some serious dollars while doing so.

That’s because most American Express cards come with Membership Rewards. Under this program, you’ll generally earn a rewards point for every dollar that you spend with your American Express card. You can then log onto the company’s Membership Rewards online home to spend the points that you’ve earned.

With summer approaching, there are plenty of travel bargains that you can nab with your points.

A Golfing Getaway

If you’re an avid golfer, you can turn 140,000 points into the Sawgrass Golf Getaway Package. You’ll spend two nights at the Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa in Florida and play 18 holes of golf for two players on the renowned Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. This course is home of the Players Championship golf tournament.

And if that’s not enough golf, you’ll also receive 18 holes of golf for two at the nearby Dye’s Valley golf course.

A Hawaiian Escape

For 230,000 points, you can book a seven-day/six-night stay at the Grand Waikikian hotel and resort. This resort, managed by Hilton, is located on the grounds of the Hilton Hawaiaan Village Beach Resort & Spa. You’ll have access to more than 20 restaurants and lounges, a world-class spa and supervised children’s recreation programs.

The resort also comes with six swimming pools, including the 5,000-square-foot Paradise Pool that boasts the longest slide in Waikiki.

Cold Weather Lovers

If your taste runs more to snow than sand, you can convert 160,000 points into a four-night stay at the Cliff Lodge in Utah, home to some of the best skiing on the globe.

The lodge, in addition to top skiing, offers a rooftop pool and hot tub, spa, fitness classes, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and plenty of shops and restaurants.

A Cheaper Option

If you don’t have quite as many rewards points, Membership Rewards offers a four-day/three-night stay with Hilton Grand Vacations in a one-bedroom suite in either Las Vegas or Orlando for just 44,000 points.

If you take this option, you can choose from three resorts in Las Vegas, the Hilton Grand Vacations Club on the Las Vegas Strip, Hilton Grand Vacations Club — Las Vegas or Hilton Grand Vacations Club at the Flamingo.

Options in Orlando include Hilton Grand Vacations Club at SeaWorld International Center or Hilton Grand Vacations Club on International Drive.
