Verdict: What’s better than free coffee? Free coffee and a free rewards card that lets you earn it. The DD Perks rewards card, issued by Dunkin’ Donuts, works similar to the Starbucks Rewards Card, in that you must first purchase a gift card (or receive one as a gift!). You can open a card with as little as $10, so if you stop at Dunkin’ Donuts frequently, this card is worth it. For occasional visitors, however, it really doesn’t pay, since you may get caught with a gift card with a balance that you won’t use.

Overview: Out of the many rewards cards we’ve been reviewing here at CreditShout.com, Dunkin’ Donuts’ DD Perks card just has one of the cutest names. Unfortunately, the actual “perks” it offers, aside from a free medium beverage for signing up and a free medium beverage on your birthday, are not well defined.

We’ve heard from people that have the card that it’s a good value. You do receive coupons and promotional offers throughout the year via email, regular mail and text messages. If you opt out of any of these ways to receive notifications, however (say you don’t want to get texts on your phone) you could miss out on rewards.

How This Card Works:
First, buy a Dunkin’ Donuts gift card loaded with at least $10. Register your gift card online, providing your phone number, email address, mailing address and birthday. You start earning rewards right away, with a mailed coupon for a free medium beverage, which includes your choice of hot or iced coffee, tea, latte, hot chocolate or Coolatta. The coupon has an expiration date of at least 35 days from the date you received it.

Throughout the year, expect to receive rewards for purchases and exclusive promotional coupons delivered via text message, email or regular mail. You can opt out of receiving communications in any of these ways, but you risk missing out on rewards and savings if you do.

Membership into the DD Perks program also gets you exclusive Dunkin’ Donuts news and information. You can also set up your DD Perks card so it always has a balance to buy coffee and donuts. Just provide your credit card number on the website and the amount you want to put on your card monthly to get a “coffee subscription.” This might be a nice perk for bosses to offer employees, especially since Dunkin’ Donuts sells DD Perks cards in bulk.

This program seems very simple — and it is. I’d like to see a few more tangible benefits and rewards since it does require loading up a gift card with money in advance. For frequent DD visitors, it’s not a bad deal. If you received a DD Perks gift card as a present, it definitely makes sense to register the card for your free beverage coupons.
But think twice before loading up money on a gift card unless you’re sure you’re going to use it.

Pros:

  • Earn free coffee
  • No annual fee

Cons:

  • Additional bonus details are vague
  • Free beverage coupons have an expiration date
  • Must purchase or receive a gift card of at least $10 and then register it online
  • You must provide your email address, mailing address and phone number or you could miss out on rewards
