Best Credit Cards – Editors Picks 2010
There are hundreds, even thousands of credit cards out there to choose from. Finding the best card can be confusing especially if you don’t know what to look for. Each year we do a round up of the best credit cards out there in each category. 2009 was an interesting year to say the least for the credit industry. Now it’s more important than ever to make sure you have a good credit card, because of the credit crunch some card companies are scaling back their rewards and increasing their fees.
There are still some great cards out there however you just have to dig a little deeper, lucky for you we’ve done the digging for you. We look for cards that have a low APR, great rewards programs and a low or no annual fee. Below we have included our top picks for 2010.
Note: We now have a cash back credit card calculator that calculates which card is best for you and how much you will save.
| Best Credit Card 2010 – Discover® More® Card |
|
The Discover® More® Card is the best credit card out there hands down. The reason we choose the Discover® More® Card as the best credit card of 2010 is because with this card you can get up to 5% cash back on your every day purchases. With almost all other cards you can only earn up to 3% – and with the credit crunch even 3% seems high these days. If you are looking for a well rounded credit card that gives you cash back for just about everything, you are definitely going to want to check out this card. In addition to offering up to 5% cash back the Discover® More® Card has no annual fee (even if this card did have an annual fee it would still probably be the card of the year because of the awesome rewards program). With this card there is also a 0% intro APR on purchases and balance transfers. I also want to point out that if you shop through the online ShopDiscover store you can also earn a 5% – 20% cash back bonus, in addition to the 5% cash back you already would receive. To increase your chances of being approved for this card, do not do a balance transfer when you apply. Wait and see what credit limit you are given, Discover gives you up to 2 months once you are accepted to do a balance transfer. Advantages

| Best Travel Rewards Credit Card 2010 – Escape by Discover |
|
The Escape by Discover® Card is a great travel rewards credit card. This card allows you to earn unlimited double miles (2 miles to every dollar you spend) on all purchases. In comparison the Miles by Discover Card only lets you earn double miles on your first $3,000 in travel and restaurant purchases. With this card you can also get 25,000 bonus miles – 1,000 bonus miles each month on your first purchase for 25 months. The Escape by Discover Card does have an annual fee of $60 however the benefits outweigh the cost and if you use the card a fair amount the annual fee should pay for itself in the first month. The Escape by Discover Card has a very flexible rewards program that allows you to redeem your miles for travel rewards (airline tickets etc..) cash or gift cards. If you have good credit the Escape by Discover card can have an APR as low as 10.99%. Advantages

| Best Hotel Rewards Credit Card 2010 – Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card |
|
The Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card is an alternative travel card for those who are looking to earn hotel stays. With this card you earn one “Starpoint” for every dollar of eligible spending and you can earn double the points on select purchases. With your first purchase you earn 10,000 Starpoints (enough for 3 free nights at select hotels). You can also transfer your Starpoints to the frequent flyer programs of over 30 major airlines. This is a great card for people who would rather earn free hotel rooms over airline tickets. One thing I really like about The Starwood Preferred Card and why it’s so highly regarded is the fact that you can use Starpoints for free nights and upgrades at participating Starwood hotels and resorts in 95 countries. The Starwood Preferred Guest Card has no annual fee for the first year, and after that it’s $45. If you use this card a lot it will pay for itself fairly quickly. Advantages

| Best Credit Card If You Carry a Balance |
|
If you are going to be carrying a balance on your credit card every month, the Discover® Motiva(SM) Card is a great card to look at. This card offers the same rewards as the Discover More card, however if you pay your bills on time for consecutive 6 months with the Discover® Motiva(SM) Card you get a rebate that equal to your next months interest.
