Here’s a review of three of the biggest supermarket credit card programs you can sign up for. These cards show you the importance of comparing credit cards before you sign up for benefits like cash back and reward points.
Kroger 1-2-3 Rewards Mastercard. Kroger’s Mastercard has a number of rewards for shoppers at the largest grocery chain in the United States. When you activate your card you’ll receive $25 off your first purchase. You also earn $1 point per dollar anywhere you use your Mastercard, 2 points per dollar spent in Kroger and Kroger-owned stores and 3 points per dollar on Kroger products and brands. Every 1,000 points can be redeemed for $5 in groceries at any Kroger store. You also get a 5¢ fuel discount at Kroger. Your APR will vary between 12.99% and 21.99% with no annual fee and zero fraud liability. You can also transfer balances to the card and pay only 2.99% APR during the introductory rate. There are a few downsides to the Kroger Mastercard, however. While you can earn up to 3 points per dollar, you only get $5 in rewards for every 1,000 points. That means you’ll need to spend $333 to $1,000 to receive a mere $5. The APR also varies wildly and can be as high as 21.99%.
True Earnings from Costco American Express. This card has a $50 annual fee which counts as your Costco membership. The APR is around 13.24% and excellent credit is required to qualify for the card. There are many benefits to the card, including the cash back. You can earn 3% cash back on gasoline up to $3,000 per year (after which you earn 1%). You also get 3% cash back at restaurants, 2% cash back on travel and 1% everywhere else you use your credit card. The card doubles as your Costco membership card and has great cash back offers and convenience. The downside to the True Earnings credit card is this: you only receive your cash back certificate or credit once per year, making it quite a long wait. Other than that, the card offers good rewards.
Wal-Mart Discover Card. Last is the Wal-Mart Discover card, with an APR anywhere from 9.87% to 18.87%. The card allows you to earn up to 3% cash back on gasoline at Wal-Mart stations, along with a cash rebate system. You earn 0.25% back on any spending up to $1,500, 0.50% on the next $1,500, and 1% on any annual spending over $3,000. You can redeem these earnings for merchandise and Wal-Mart and more, including cash. The downside to the credit card is the gasoline rebate is only offered at select gas stations. In addition, the rebate is low compared to many other cards. Still, the Wal-Mart Discover card is available to individuals that don’t have the best credit, giving them access to a cash-back credit card with a fair APR.
As you can see, there are many things to consider if you want to apply for a supermarket credit card to save money on groceries each month. The best choice for those with excellent credit is the True Earnings card from Costco, earning up to 3% cash back on certain purchases. The card has no annual fee if you maintain your Costco membership because the Costco fee doubles as the card’s annual fee. The Wal-Mart Discover card is also a good choice for many individuals because it has good rebates for people that don’t qualify for better rewards cards.
However, if your goal is merely to save money on grocery costs each month you may be better off with a rewards card that offers cash back on a variety of purchases, including groceries. Here are the best credit cards to get rewards and cash back on grocery purchases.
American Express Blue Cash. This credit card has a tiered system that allows you to ultimately earn up to 5% cash back on groceries, among other things.
Capital One No Hassle Cash Rewards. This credit card allows you to earn 2% cash back on grocery store purchases as well as spending at gas stations. You also get 1% cash back on all other purchases. There’s no limit to your rewards and you’ll have no annual fee. You can still get this credit card if your credit score is only average, allowing you to earn 1% back on groceries and all purchases.
Chase Freedom. This is another great credit card for earning cash back on groceries. You’ll earn 3% cash back on grocery purchases, along with gas and fast food spending, for the first six months. After that you get 1% unlimited cash back on everything with no expiration dates or caps.
American Express Business Blue Cash. This credit card for businesses lets you earn a tiered 5% cash back on groceries, drug store spending and gasoline. You can also get a tiered 1.5% back on everything else you spend on.
There are many options for rewards cards that earn cash back on grocery purchases. Keep in mind that a store-specific credit card may not suit your needs if your credit is good enough to get a better rewards card.
